Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

I just got a JWT clutch and flywheel combo installed by the dealership and now i hear a rattling sound, especially at low rpms.
When the dealership was installing the clutch they said that the stock throw-out bearing was not compatible with teh JWT clutch, but after talking to Jim Wolf they managed to use that stock one. The service writer also told me that they had trouble adjusting the clutch, thats why it took almost a week to complete.
The car drives fine, i guess, ive only got 200 miles on the clutch, but it is a lot different than stock. You have to push the clutch pedal in almost all they way before the clutch dissengages.
has anyone else had any problems with their JWT clutch? any rattling noise? did the installer have any problems with the throw-out bearing?

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

I get a rattling sound when the car is in N and the clutch is disengaged. If I push the clutch in the noise goes away. I was told it was most likely a throwout bearing issue. I will call Crawford this week and see what they have to say about it, since they did the install.

The dual-mass flywheel helps eliminate noise from the transmission. Going to a single mass flywheel makes the transmission noisier. This is normal according to all the sources I've read.

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

This is the problem with going to an aftermarket flywheel. Your engine is designed to have X amount of mass there, and youve replaced it with much less. Your actually straining your crank in the same way the pulley set "should". It should only happen when your pulling "out of gear". I havve the Nismo clutch, pressure plate and jwt flywheel about to be high speed balanced with the car, which will eliminate this problem, however, its a lil pricey.

it is normal for there to be clutch chatter, mine and my friends 2 Zs both do it every so often. At idle is just makes that noise, the fix: push the clutch in just hope it doesnt happen in a tunnel/garage, it seems lOUd than

I spoke with Doug from Crawford Z today and he told me that its the JWT flywheel. He said that they all rattle but he isn't sure why. They all seem to be fine. I hate it, and even if its 'normal' it doesn't sound right. I hate having my car rattle like something is broke at idle.

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

All aftermarket lightened flys rattle. In gneral the lighter the fly the more the rattle, but the more the perfoemance benefit.
Raisng idel a little to say 850rpm reduces it some. Lightened flys actually reduce the crank loads and extend tranny synchro life since the speed matching is more acurate especially during agressive downshifts. Anyone thinkin that a lighened crank pulley or ligtened fly (that are properlydesigned) put greater strain on the crank are mis-informed. The VQ35 is fully "internally" balanced. The heavy dual mass OEM fly is desinged to reduce noise from the "trans" not the longblock.

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

You can also search under "cement mixer" on Fresh Alloy. Apparently this is a common problem and your search will turn up quite a bit of info. As mentioned in this thread, the only known solution is to press in the clutch while at idle. Sounds like it may be more annoying than I'd prefer for a daily driver... I'd be interested to see how EX250's project turns out. I'd also like to see a price tag at the end of his journey.

What? You think that John Kerry is not consistent?

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

jdove... My oil analysis says other wise. But thats ok.

Neffster... The project is going to start within the next 1-3 weeks, depending on my work schedule, when I want to not have the car for a long period of time, etc. Depending on how long it takes will be how much it costs obviously, so as of right now, price could go anywhere from 200 to who knows dollars. I feel like the Guinea pig alot latley. Hehe. Oh well, gotta pay if ya wanna play.

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

Throwout bearings make more of a water running sound when they are worn or failing.

The rattling is apparently quite normal. As I've mentioned before, the Supra 6-speeds have a very similar noise and they also use a dual-mass flywheel. They have also been proven to be one of the strongest OEM trannies available. There is some noise even with the OEM flywheel and clutch.

Re: Anyone get rattling sound with JWT clutch and Fly

I don't see how this would be straining the crank. Modern engines are internally balanced. Harmonic balancers are a thing of the past. Flywheels and pulleys are balanced independently of the motor as the rotating assembly no longer requires the use of them to halp balance out vibrations. The only thing a pully tend to eliminate is the harmonic dampers which are designed to smooth out the pulses of torque created by each individual combustion, and only to the accessories.

High speed balancing the entire assembly will gain you very little benefit, if any. At best, if there are any balance issues with any aftermarket parts you added, those would be eliminated. But balancing each part by itself should achieve the same results.
