Transmission problem??

I have an original 2003 G35 Sedan, 5AT with about 100,000 miles. While going down the freeway this morning, something weird happened. I was going 70mph and I wanted to pass another car. I gently accelerated and my speed did not increase. I gave it a little more gas and nothing happened. I looked at the tach and it increased to 4000-5000. My speed dropped to about 65mph but it didn't fall rapidly. So my tach was responding, I could hear the engine roar, but my speed was not increasing...After about 20 seconds or so, my car was normal again. I didn't feel it kick into gear, it just started responding again. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong??

Not sure what CAI means...

It was not raining or even wet.

On my way home last night it did it again. It does not do it from a dead stop or going at low speeds. But when I am at a constant speed of 40mph or greater it happens. I step on the accelerator, the engine revs, and my speed stays about the same. If I keep accelerating, slowly the gears will engage and the car will start to accelerate. kinda like a clutch slipping on a manual transmission...

could this be a torque converter problem? Do our cars have torque converters?

sorry, CAI = Cold Air Intake.

My car did this before, but it's been a long time.
When it did it, it also threw a light about running lean (which I determined was due to my CAI filter getting wet in the rain.

IDK if the two problems were related or not

OK, my neighbor was able to get to the transmission fluid and says that the fluid smells burnt...I'm not sure where I want to go from here. Should I spend the money to diagnose the problem further??

^Why don't you just change the fluid and filter and see if the problem goes away.

have you done a transmission flush? if not, this could very well save your transmission if that is the issue in question

No "filter" to speak of n00b.

OP definitely change the fluid or have it done. Stick to Nissan S-Matic for best results IMO.

That's a slipping trans. You can try and change the fluid and see if that saves it, but more than likely it's burning up internally and too late.

Time to take it to a shop that specializes in transmission repair.
