Front Diff problems
Front Diff problems
First off my name is Josh. Im not new to tuner or forum worlds. Ive had numerous cars but now own an EVO VIII. But am new to this site. Hopefully you guys can help me out.
My mom has a 05' G35x AT.
Started hearing a clunking/grinding noise coming from the front right wheel well. My step father thought it was the CV joint. I never got to hear it. He orderd the CV joint.
We Installed it and the noise was still there. So took it apart again. Then i spun the hub and felt something was wrong with the bearing. So orderd a new bearing, pressed it in and then put everything back together again.
The original clunking/grinding noise was gone but then there was a loud winding noise coming from the front diff. Sounds like the noise you hear when you reverse in a 5 speed. but A LOT louder. The faster you go the faster the noise gets.
If you turn the car on then go the noise dosen't always start right away. You'll drive a little bit then hear like a click noise and the winding will start. Once it starts it won't stop again till you shut the car off.
So we thought the axle might not be seated right but we took apart/installed 3 different times. One of the times we took the metal cup type thing that seals around where the axle goes into the diff off. Installed like that so we could see inside as we installed the axle. It's seems like it's seating right. We have to use the puller to get it back out. Can't remove it by hand.
We also looked inside the diff and the gears and clip ring appear not to be damaged.
On the CV If you pull on the inner boot that butts up against the diff it seems there is excessive play. When you pull on the left side of the diff there is barley any movement. Also we know the noise is coming from the diff because we put the car up on stands and I got under the car while it was ran. It's cleary coming from the diff.
Sorry for the long post. I tried to make it as easy to read as possible. I'm so frustrated I just wanna burn the car at this point. They'd bring it to a dealer but they don't really have the money for that right now. So any help you guys can provide would be great. Thanks.

If its coming from the diff then clearly it needs to be removed and inspected. I've never heard of this being an issue with the X though.
If there is excessive play its def a bad thing. It should be the same on the right as it is on the left.
Have you taken a look at the service manual? I'll PM you a link to all the nissan FSM

Just looked through that. The noise/vibration troubleshooting section said that if it was just a noise, no vibration, then it was the front diff. Which i was assuming anyway. It says to reference the noise/vibration section under FFD (front final drive). When you try to open the FFD section it keeps saying Page Not Found.
I cant catch a break with this car. That seems like it would help but I cant see the page I need to. Know any other sources for the service manual?
