can the 5AT manual shift be reversed?
can the 5AT manual shift be reversed?
I know this sounds odd, but I'd prefer to downshift by pushing forward. Has anyone done this? I'm guessing that the wires from 2 momentary switches underneath the console would need to be swapped (or swapped at the transmission control unit, wherever it is)
Any suggestions?
thanks

easiest access point swapping wires?
DHCrocks- thanks, have you seen where the wires run? Would it be easier to get to the console end (I assume the whole console would have to come out) or switch the wires at the trans control unit? I've no idea where the TCU is, or even if it's separate from the ECU.
thanks again

anybody with a schematic?
sorry for all the questions... does anyone have a schematic for this? What I'm thinking is that it might be smarter to put in a multipole switch (concealed) so that if I ever have trans trouble (and I hear from other posts that that is a possibility) I could easily switch it back before taking to the dealer. So if I had a schematic, I would know if there is a common line (either 12 V or ground) that goes to both microswitches. Then only 2 wires would need to be switched, which could be accomplished with a single DPDT switch.
Of course, warranty aside, the cleanest job would be to physically move the wires (or the switches themselves) in the console, and physically move the +/- gear indicators as well.

get it at the shift lever, easiest location. Simply lift up on the back end of the console trim piece and it comes off, no screws attached. you need to unclip some wire harnesses for the heated seats, ashtray lights... and the the shifter lever but that's it. It can be done in under a minute. As you can see on the attached diagrams only wires 7 and 8 need to be switched. I would not recommend placing a toggle to revert back to normal as that could be disasterous, since you would be used to shifting in one direction and could accidentaly down shift insead of upshift if you made the switch. Keep it one way to be safe.

woo hoo, thank you!!!
DHCrocks, this is great - so it's not going to be all that hard. Can you tell me where the "A/T device harness connector" is. If that is somewhere that I don't have to pull up interior panels, I'd prefer to go that road, as I'm afraid of starting interior rattles.
If I read the connector correctly, it's pins 7 and 8 that would need to be swapped.
Where do these pages come from? Is it something we can buy, or only available to service folks?
thanks so much

oops, typo. You're correct pins 7 and 8. Easiest place to get to the wires would be at the shifter it self. it's a simple panel removal and shouldn't intoduce any rattles.
those pages are from the G35 service manual, you can download it for 20 bucks, I forgot the address but do a search and it'll come up.
