Differential Noise

Does anyone know if this is normal? There is no fluid in the Diff yet. I went to the dealer to ask and they just said to put fluid in it and see if it makes the same noise.

Before I pour in fluid, I just want to know if this is normal to do this?

If anyone has their rear jacked up, with the Car in Neutral just move one of the wheels like I am doing in the video, do you hear anything?

Update: Well this is a normal sound when there is no fluid int he diff. I Put fluid in the diff and its quiet now.

^ Spinning the wheels does not get the noise to happen, its kinda specific you have to jutter them a small distance like 1/2 and inch forward and back. I think its comming from the meshing of the Drive Pinion and Ring gear, I just dont know if this is normal or not.

did you change anything? sounds maybe backlash or sidelash might be a little off.

Nope just opened it from its wrapping from shipping. I think its normal just no one notices it. I just hope someone can test it out soon.

Backlash is at its max allowable limit " 0.0059". Tooth contact is fine, and runout is fine on both input flange and ring gear

How do we measure sidelash? I followed what the service manual covers.

i assume if the backlash is within tolerance than the sidelash would be too just for the sake of the ring and pinion not being completely flat and meet at an angle. My differential is actually at a shop right now bc the guy changing out my ring and pinion couldn't get the backlash right. so i'm not too sure honeslty

^ The service manual tells you what to do if backlashs is not within spec, its pretty straight forward to fix it, on PG 20 of section RFD in the service manual

Backlash
1. Remove rear cover. Refer to RFD-22, "Differential Assembly" .
2. Fit a dial indicator to the drive gear face to measure the backlash.
If the backlash is outside of the specified value, change the
thickness of side bearing adjusting washer.

CAUTION:
Do not change the total amount of washers as it will change the bearing preload.

Backlash: 0.10 - 0.15 mm (0.0039 - 0.0059 in)

When the backlash is large:
Make drive gear back side adjusting washer thicker,
and drive gear tooth side adjusting washer thinner by
the same amount. Refer to RFD-58, "Side Bearing
Adjusting Washer" .

When the backlash is small:
Make drive gear back side adjusting washer thinner,
and drive gear tooth side adjusting washer thicker by
the same amount. Refer to RFD-58, "Side Bearing
Adjusting Washer" .
So it isnt too bad to fix it, hope yours is together soon, what gears did you get?
