03 G35 coupe 6mt grind from 2nd to 3rd gear

My name is Zach and ive been looking at buying a g35 coupe for a couple of years. I ran into a good opportunity to buy one cheap today and now im in the process.
Details on the car: 03' coupe 6-speed 103k miles. Its stock and everything works. The pass window motor is out (read that this is a common issue). I also noticed a minor exhaust leak at the mid-pipe muffler flange. Other than a couple of scratches it is very nice. Lady was asking $10k but i talked her down to $8500 before test drive.

So i asked about trans grinds and she said it was ok, granted it was her sons car whose away at college. So i test drove it and sure enough 2nd to 3rd on quick shifts there is a grind. I assume its the synchronizer and will need a transmission. My thoughts are that this is a good chance to get it for less $ and get a fresh clutch and trans in it.
I have 2 questions

1. What is the best way to go about fixing the trans:
A. Replacing with low mileage used trans from a newer Z or G?
B. have it rebuilt with updated parts
C. Buy from a place that has reman trans

2. Are there any trans removal writups that anyone is aware of? I have all tools necessary and have removed honda transaxles but i have no lift. My concern is if i have to drop engine and transmission together underneath the car to pull the transmission.

Let me know if you have any advice. Right now im thinking $7,000 on the car

The 3rd and 5th gear syncros are a pretty common issue on the earlier G's and Z's. Honestly not worth the trouble to rebuild or replace if it still shifts reasonably well. Redline fluid will help make shifts a little smoother (made mine bearable) but if it isn't to your satisfaction or you just want to go ahead and do it, the more cost effective route between rebuild and replace is to just go ahead and buy a new trans. (Don't quote me on that, but I remember pricing out the revised rebuild kit with labor and it came out to something extreme) There are some transmissions already with revised internals and are pretty easy to find from a specialty shop (or site vendors). I'm not sure if the beefed up internals actually came on a certain year model or not, maybe someone else can chime in

Infiniti updated the transmission in 2005 I believe, and again somewhere around 2008 (search on Google).

Your cheapest route is to buy a used 2005 transmission (can find for ~$500, car-part.com) and have a shop install it for ~$500. Exedy stock replacement flywheel is $250, but the killer is the dual mass flywheel. You are not supposed to resurface it and a new one is $900+. I bought a LuK but it was still $530... All said and done, it is around $1,750.

Awesome, thanks for the information. That rebuilt transmission is like $2500 with misc parts (clutch kit, flywheel, etc) and shipping. Id like to get parts at the $1500 range but thats going to be with a used transmission. If that is my best bet then id go with that updated reman.

Its a common problem in 03-04's. I had the same problem. Only way to fix it, is to replace it with a cd009 transmission. I did and it shifts like butter compared to the old 03-04 transmissions.

all the new 6 speeds are cd009 transmissions. If your buying used, then look for the sticker. There's a sticker on the bottom of the transmission case that saids cd009. Only late model 05's and newer had the cd009. Also the 08 + 350z's has the HR trannies which arent compatible with the older engines.

I would check my350z.com if your looking for a used cd009. I've seen them go for $600-800.

here's a example of the sticker
