Oil

Proper lubrication is the most significant factor in the longevity of a car. Most newer engines (N/A) would outlast the car if they had frequent oil changes with quality oil.

Synthetic oil is clearly superior to conventional oil in several areas, perhaps the most important of which is its greater service life. While oil companies are quite unlikely to suggest that owners extend drain times beyond that recommended by the car maker, performance wise, synthetic oils will continue to protect an engine well beyone prescribed drain times. Periodic oil analysis can confirm this.

I use synthetic oil in all of my vehicles with the excellent results I expect. A few years ago, I bought a used Maxima having the 3.0L engine with about 12K miles on it. It was not burning oil, of course. I used Mobile 1 exclusively in that car. We racked up just shy of 300,000 miles on it before selling it and never added oil between changes. Typically, the oil was changed twice per year with about 15K miles between changes. I also have a diesel van which sees Delvac 1 exclusively and my experience is similar.

One area where you might encounter an issue would be in a high mileage car which has had only conventional oil and was poorly maintained. In such a case, the engine would probably be full of deposits and those deposits might be "preventing" oil consumption by blocking possible areas of leakage. If you switched such a car to synthetic oil, the very high detergent qualities of synthetic would remove those deposits with the likely result that the engine would start to consume oil.

But for a new car, synthetic oil is the best option, even if the car has used conventional oil for a bit. My cars will never see anything else.

How many diff forums are you going to post the exact same question?

You put almost 300,000 miles on a Maxima in just a few years? Man, you must have one helluva commute and gas bill.

Time flies! I bought the car in '92 and sold it in '02.

Hard to compare older Nissan designs [for reliability and longevity] with current maximing HP light weight designs...........no oil use vs lots of oil use.

I am flat spoiled with a 90 Q45 that I kept for 16 years 308,000 miles and insignificant oil use........less than a quart in 90 days/3750 miles.

The new 2002 and later identical displacement V8 while a touch more powerful needs oil additions every month like some domestics.

Careful of the 3.5 because the sump volume is so miniscule! Check it after each fill up!

The amount of oil consumed is not so much a function of the type of oil used, but more of a proper maintenance issue. Synthetic oil doens't break down under high heat conditions so it is more forgiving during times where the limits are pushed. A car using regular oil that is changed on or before the prescribed maintenance interval for the life of the car "should" not exhibit any more wear than the same car on synthetic. I would rather place my bets on the safe side and go synthetic in case I do approach or exceed the limits on occassion.
