Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

Only had the G 2 weeks and still love the car...BUT, I am new to this whole ECU rebooting and I am not pleased. I have never heard of a car where you had to keep reseting it just to get top performance out of it! Am I the only one who thinks this is lame.

"Hey wanna race...hang on let me get out of my car and unplug my battery for 12 hours!"..."WHAT...you don't have time..OK hang on a minute let me get my instructions out for doing it in my car!"...stupid

Yep... most cars have adaptive ECUs these days and do just go towards average performance over time. The key is, some of those cars have "sport" buttons that essentially tell the ECU "forget what you know-- just do it." We don't have such a button, unfortunately. It's my hope that Infiniti will get this in a later model, but judging by their lineup, I don't think it's going to be a reality any time soon.

Re: Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

The whole adaptive ECU thing is to make the car as smooth as possible. Since we have drive-by-wire the adaptive ECU tries to make the start-up acceleration smooth rather than a jerky launch at a stop or at highway speeds the drive-by-wire adjusts the throttle to be more responsive rather than a conventional mechanical throttle cable where you have to some times floor it to get it moving at highway speeds.

But yea I wish we had a switch to turn the adaptive ECU off like the VDC.

If I am not mistaken they have that switch on the JMD models and I think it is possible to get the switch intergated in the car. The switch is near the shifter.

You guys are insane. I've had my car for a few months now and theres no difference in driveability from the first day I picked it up.

Really? You probably just don't notice how granny'd your
car has become. Do the reset and see how it is supposed
to perform.

I have done many modes so far(check out my ride) and I do feel the performance increase every time and it stays that way. I have never reset the ecu, I think its dumb as well. I will get the technosquare ecu though next.

nark, you have the 6MT, these guys are talking about the adaptive transmission and shift points with the 5AT model g35....

with the 6MT, resetting the ECU does not accomplish too much.

Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

I know the 350z was advertised even from the beginning as having aftermarket mod parts available soon after it's release. These were to be supplied by NISMO, which is the official Nissan aftermarket supplier. Why would Nissan/Infiniti put out an adaptive ECU that makes these worthless? Am I missing something here?

Re: Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

Exactly and I am pretty sure that I read somewhere a short interview with a nismo tech that said that resetting the ecu isnt neccesary. But I dont really care either way, I'll be getting the technosquare ecu soon anyway.

Re: Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

I did the ECU reset at one month and did not observe any qualitative performance change whatsoever, good or bad. Common belief is that it is more "measurable" on the A/T cars however. I'll do it again and measure a few 0-60 and quarter mile accelerometer results before and after, then post the results.

So far, nobody has shown any data other than "seat of pants" observations to lend much credibility to the ECU reset benefit.

Re: Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

Thats exactly why it seems to me why it really doesnt do anything. The tranny in the 5AT is controlled by a different module so resetting the ecu should do nothing to it. So it leads me to believe that the ecu reset would do the same on 5AT and 6MT.

Re: Having to reset the ECU is LAME!

Shader7: I'm totally with you on this one. There must be at least 150 posts on this resetting ECU subject. It is a total MYTH. It unequivocally can not be accomplished by any of the methods suggested in most of the posts. I raised this question with a Nissan/Infiniti Master Mechanic who has 18 years experience with the Corporation. I showed him a print out of the accelerator ignition switch routine, and he broke out laughing. He said that was 15 year old technology, and just does not work on today's electronic cars. I also asked about the battery disconnect. He said you could leave the battery disconnected for a week, and it would not reset the ECU. He said it is reset with their equipment, period. I haven't touched my ECU, and I have no interest in doing so. The car is as peppy now as when I took delivery. Though, I must say, it was given no "granny" break in.
