Underdrive pulleys

Please excuse my ignorance and my search button on my keyboard is missing . Back in the day when I had a 5.0 Mustang underdrive pulleus were a solid 10hp gain on a chassis dyno and an easy 0.1 sec at the track. Same goes for my 351/5.8L Lightning pickup. I've had friends with LT1/LS1 Camaros with the same gain.

As I posted in another area, the dollars spent vs. hp gained is a bit silly. Is there a definate set in stone time change/dyno change with underdrive pulleys.

I'm talking crank, alternator, and waterpump pulleys here.

The 5.0/5.8 UDPs underdrove the water pump and that's where most of the gains came from. The timing chain on the VQ-series drive the water pump therefore the gains won't be there. Expect 1-3 whp from an UDP on a VQ motor. IMO, it's hardly worth the money, plus you'll be replacing the crank pulley which is actually a two peice unit with an elastomer ring sandwiched in the middle. This ring acts as a crank damper.

Thanks for not flaming me....

I wasn't expecting 10 ponies, but 1 is definately not worth the money or time.

Thanks for a legitimate answer.....

You're not going to see much dyno gain, if anything from the pulleys. Then again, don't dynos generally measure pulls from 3K rpm and up? The difference I felt was more in the low rpm range.

I just installed the UR crank pulley a couple days ago. After I reset the ECU, I definitely feel it rev quick up to 3K-4K, and it pulls slightly harder. If you're looking for dyno gain, this mod isn't for you. But the car is definitely more fun to drive with the pulley in, especially cuz I'm usually in traffic.

So why would the ecu need to be reset after a pulley swap?
