oil grade

Hi all,
I live in Hawaii and just wondering if I should put 5W-30 or 10W-30. Can you tell me what is the difference and how would they be different in the engine. Anyways, hope all of you are having a fun time in your G. Thanks!

Re: oil grade

The cold flow on the 10 weight wouldn't be as good as the 5 weight, but that only comes into play at very cold temps.
In Hawaii, you're good to go with either in my book, but Nissan recommends the 5, so if I were you, I'd stay with it.
You would not notice any difference in the 2 oils.

Re: oil grade

I asked this question over at bobistheoilguy.com and everyone recommended 10W30 over the 5W30 since there's no snow in Florida. The lighter weight is necessary only at subzero temperatures.

Re: oil grade

Thanks Chinee! So what do you put into your G? Wouldn't 10W30 has alittle better protection since its thicker.

Re: oil grade

In theory the thicker grade should provide better protection, but with Mobil1, the 5W30 and 10W30 are so close, that the difference in thickness is almost negligible. I think there's another advantage that supports the use of 10W30 in our year-round summer climate, but I can't think of it right now. If it begins to bother me, I'll go check out bob's.

BTW, I use 10W30 Mobil1 synthetic with the Purolator Premium Plus oil filter (Pure One not available), and I change my oil and filter every 7,500 miles. I have a lab perform an oil analysis each time I change... more as a hobby rather than as a need.

Not necessarily!. The 10 is the weight of the oil at lower temperatures and the 30 is the weight at the higher temperatures. Since you live in Hawaii and it is warm year round, 10W30 is all you need. I went with Mobil 1 at 7500 Mi.

Re: oil grade

I use 5w-30. My friend sells amsoil and his distributor was trying to get me to become a dealer. I was just going to sign up for the discount. anyone here ever try amsoil? I was going to try the 0w-30 synthetic.

Re: oil grade

Amsoil is held in very high regard by most oil enthusiasts (yes, there are such people), however, an equal number of enthusiasts also find it to be overkill for a typical daily driver. Even those who use and stand by Amsoil, admit that Mobil1 is about as much protection most people need.

Check out bobistheoilguy.com and ask your question over there. Let them know you're a newbie and they'll help you out. Amsoil dealers also make up a fair percentage of the regulars over there.

Re: oil grade

thanks for the info chinee

Yeah I can't believe how dedicated the distributor was. He spent probably a good 2 and half hours explaining the product and being a dealer. He didn't even do this full time, but his truck had huge amsoil stickers all over it.

Even if I became a dealer I wouldn't make a profit on my own, I would just sell it at the cost price. I'm in the east bay so locals could just pick it up from me. I don't know if it's worth someone paying shipping to get it at cost price from me. I'm more into being a dealer to get the product for myself .
