Oil Additive?

Does anyone use one of these, I was thinking about Prolong or Slick 50.

Re: Oil Additive?

DON'T !!! Everything I've read re actually testing of this stuff says it's a rip-off.
Unfortunately I read this after I spent good money many years ago on various products including Slick 50, Dura-Lube, etc.
Better to just use a good oil filter and 100% synthetics.

Re: Oil Additive?

I had a feeling that was the case. I've always wondered if these actually do more harm than good.

Re: Oil Additive?

Use synthethic oil.

At first oil change interval I will be swapping to Mobil 1 w/OEM oil filter.

The use of the OEM filter will save you if anything should occur.

Re: Oil Additive?

I thought about changing to Mobil 1 in the first oil change as well. I've been reading so many posts about better performance and gas mileage after a 6-10K mile break-in, I decided I'd wait. Changed this week just using 5w/30 Quaker State. That plastic cover is a real pain! 14 bolts and 1 press clip! Luckily I used a 10mm socket on my drill and had access to a service pit. The good thing is that once the cover is off, the filter is easy to get at and remove with a standard strap filter wrench, unlike many other cars where you can barely reach it, much less get it off. Took some pics while I was under there if anyone's interested.
BTW, the service rep told me that Infiniti recommends 12K miles before switching to synthetic oil. He said that the cars that start out with Mobil 1 (Viper, Porsche, etc) have engines that are designed with tolerances that take synthetics in consideration during break-in. Anyone else know anything about this?

Re: Oil Additive?

The usual advice is to wait until 10k for mobil 1. Which in my plan.

Re: Oil Additive?

I just hit 10 and am going to be making a change this week.
So the best idea is for me to change to Mobil 1? Is there anything else i should take into consideration(filters, etc)?

If i switch to Mobil 1 should i let the service deptment do it? Will they even do it?

Any and all advice would be very appreciated

Marcel

Re: Oil Additive?

Hey Marcel, I do my own changes but for some that can be a pain. Some of the guys were saying that they take in the oil they want put in if the shop hasn't got what they need. The drawback is that they still charge full price. I guess that's always negotiable. I like synthetics and use Syntec, but don't think you can 'feel' the extra 1or 2 HP . Well worth the insurance tho long term, (IMO) Gsedanman- Garnet Fire Sedan
