MODS 101: Rank Order

I have a stock G35 AT sedan with sports/aero pacakge. I am looking for a mods list, that does not void factory warranty, in order of priority (biggest bang for the buck) that includes the following:

1.) Mod Type
2.) Expected HP/Torque Gains
3.) Mod Cost
4.) Recommended Manufacturer
5.) Recommended Installer (if known) in Columbus, Ohio

Also, Does the technosquare ECU chip require mods installed prior to getting the chip, or is it like plug and play? In otherwords, can I get the chip first and then get other mods done afterwords that will recognized by the chip?

Looking forward to your responses,

g4ian

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

Anyone else want to field this one? No one that asks this question ever gives all the information...g4ian, what are you looking for? I'm not making a list of mods when I don't know how far you want to go and what your budget is...I'm not trying to be rude, but every few weeks someone comes here and wants all of us that have done months of research to just do the footwork for them...I'll answer questions about specific components, but I'm not going to make a comprehensive list until I have all the factors of what you want and what you can do...Like I said, if someone else wants to take that time to do that be my guest...CAI and exhaust can't void a warranty unless it's proven that they cause damage, and that goes with any mod...If the dealership can prove that the mod you've made is damaging the vehicle your warranty will be voided...As far as TechnoSquare's ECU, do the mods first and then get the ECU programmed for you

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

I'll have to second the above....g4ian, you'll find that everybody here wants to help you, it's just that we get asked these hugely-detailed open ended questions that require a lot more typing on our behalf, than it would searching on yours. Take a trip down memory lane in the Technical/Mods forum.

Then if you still have questions, post back here on specifics....what is it that you want? Lots of HP? More growl? Dressed up engine bay? etc. . .

We'll all be here waiting for ya, don't worry! Oh ya...to clarify the ECU thing...it is flashed for your setup at the time of the install.. it will cost you around $150 to keep having it changed for your mods. Which is one reason I have not done it yet.

Cheers, Ted

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

To clarify my original post:
I was looking for mods that will primarily increase hp/torque at this point. In terms of cost-mods that tend to cost less than $1000.00 individually. As for not doing months of research....I thought that was the point of this forum-to draw upon the expertise of others in collaborative manner.

Thanks,
g4ian

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

Let me just tell you what mods I have, and say that I'm very happy with them.

-Borla TD Exhaust, about $750 US, added about 10 hp
-Crawford Upper Intake Plenum, $500 if you return OEM plenum...yielded 10 to 15 hp
- K&N CAI on order, about $240, good for about 10 hp
-Grounding Kit, $75, smooths engine, adds a few hp
-an ECU upgrade sometime in the future (now that all the mods are done), about $600, adds about 10 to 15 hp depending on mods.

I'd love to add F/I but don't want to forgo my factory warranty.
Good luck with your mods.

Gsedan has a good setup with minimal risk.

When it comes to warranty work, you will be at the mercy of your service manager, particularly with drivetrain issues in light of performance modifications.

One more thing, any mods like what GSM mentioned wont add up to each other. Whatever the manufacturer claims is based on the stock car vs the mod. So for example if the CAI gives you 10hp and the exchaust 10hp, you will most likely get something like 13-16hp total out of the 2.

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

Note that Gsedanman has a G Coupe, not a Sedan. I'm not sure what the status on the Borla exhaust for the Sedan is or the current ECUs. The plenum and grounding kit are fine though, and I would think the K&N CAI would work too, unless they've done something odd with it.

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

G35Gnome, I agree that my mods won't add up to the sum of all the hp gains. Cumulatively, they add up to over 30, but realisticly the gain is more like 20.
If I ever added F/I tho, that gain might be more than in just a stock engine.

I am hoping for that, as I am planning to put in a TT or SC setup next year. Its great that we are getting quite a few F/I options now, and by the spring/summer the prices will be down and longer reviews from owners available. Its so nice to have that little (Z) brother.

where are you ordering your K&N cai from? That sounds like a good price.

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

I asked my dealer in Brantford (Ontario) to get me a price in Canadian $. That price I quoted was from their website in US $.
I'm expecting it to be about $300 to $325. Canadian.

Try this website for K&N prices: Perf. Prods.com
The p/n for the red CAI I want is: 69-7080TR

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

You're correct, g4ian, this site is designed to allow access to the experience and expertise of others...We all just wanted to know what exactly you want, and as I'm one of the drivers here that will pay what seems to others to be ridiculous amounts of money for different items I wanted to know what budget you were working with...My only other question is whether you wanted to go FI later, as Dreamworkes is supposedly coming out with a supercharger that will work in conjunction with the warranty...GSM has a very effective and pretty safe set-up, as was pointed out earlier...I'm working on a few projects at the moment but I will get back to this thread either later tonight or tomorrow

Re: MODS 101: Rank Order

my best mod yet:

Relocate the damn VDC button. I moved mine and the headlight dimmer wheel to the center console where the heated seat buttons go. This will save me from cussing many times in the near future.

As far as cost goes, it will be pretty easy to get to just above the Z's power, as we need intake/exhaust/ECU to get to z power and then we can add the plenum/headers to see around 260 whp, but then we plateau. From there you will need fuel and internal engine mods (cams, pistons) to see more power. to get to that plateau will cost you around 2500.00-4000.00. Or with FI you can shoot right thru that plateau for around 1-2000.00 more.
