Engine Driven Radiator Fan

I have a 2003.5 Sedan AT that has an engine driven radiator fan. Is there any advantage in changing this to an electric fan? Is this possible? Has anyone done this?

Thank you,
Rick

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

It's been discussed before in depth. I just ran a search in this section ounder radiator fan and I found the posts. I'd post the results but this boards search engine doesn't allow for posting mass search results.

Dang straight, it's all about the glory of helping. Who have you helped today?

RKG35,

Yes. Some "experts" say up to 15hp.

Yes it's possible.

I'm 85 to 90% done with the fan changeout project. Researching "stand alone" AT Sedan wiring as well as some personal issues have negatively impacted the project.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

I searched, but couldn't find any specific info. on how this was done. If anyone has completely retrofitted their 5AT sedan belt fan with an electric, please list part #'s, and any wiring diag. needed to do the job. I don't want to reinvent the wheel unless I have to. Also, I wonder if the factory 6MT sedan electric fan/shroud assy. will be a direct bolt on to the radiator? Should be easy to connect to the factory thermostat as well.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

karlhungus,

I guess there's several ways to do this. I've considered three.

Yes, the 350Z - G35 Coupe - G35 MT Sedan Radiator Fan Assembly is a direct bolt-on.

Not necessarily. The IPDM E/R fan control circuits and Engine Room Wiring Harness are different.

To date I have not been able to find the temp setting that kicks on the AT Sedan's Aux fan or the temp setting for the dual fan setup for that matter. Since the AT Sedan has a 180F thermostat and the others have a 170F thermostat, I'm believe there's at least 10F difference in when the ECU turns these fans on and off.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

Thanks,

Good to know that a direct bolt-on will work, now how much $$$$$? Probably too much. I think I could find a good aftermarket thermostat fan switch from FAL or others that would work. Bypassing the ECU seems like the best way to activate it at this point.

Radiator Fan Assembly - Part # 21481-CD000

I've been quoted from the lower $300 range to over $400 from various Nissan & Infiniti Dealers. Of course you'll have to add shipping and tax to those numbers.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

Whoa,

Thats better than I could find. I just called the local dealer and he said $534.00 for the whole 6MT sedan assy. (dual fan motors, 2 fan blades, shroud, mounts.) Too rich for me to spend on 5-10 HP, but $250 would be more like it. Too bad FAL doesn't make a kit for the G yet. They have the model 210 kit for the I30, probably would work but be ugly unless you had really good fabrication skills for custom mounts etc. I think I'll wait for aftermarket.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

I have an '04 G35x sedan and there is no engine driven fan. Maybe someone can dig up part numbers and such quicker than I can while at work. I will look to see if I can find anything once I get home. Happy/Safe New Year to All.

DaveO....

So if we were to change out the thermostat, would the MT fan assy work?

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

Ted,

I don't have the MT Sedan t-stat information. I recommend you use the following Nissan part numbers.

Thermostat Part # 21200-4W010
Gasket Part # 13050-31U00

I'm sure Performance Nissan can supply a 350Z t-stat and gasket at a good price.

Here's a picture of my electric fan that I used to replace the mechanical fan on my AT Sedan.

Re: Engine Driven Radiator Fan

E-Fan Project Status.

Another surprise - another difference! The dual radiator fan shroud will not directly mount on AT Sedan's lower radiator support assembly. The mounting points are totally different. Another assumption gone wrong. You'd think I'd have learned by now.

My e-fan is now mounted on the mechanical fan's shroud as shown in my picture above. I'm in the final stages of "tuning" the variable speed controller's start point and verifying proper operation.
