pinging???

so I just bought my car and on Acceleration, it sorta sounds like a rattle sound coming from the engine. it only has 800 miles on it but I don't know what gas they put in it. Will bad gas cause rattle/pinging on acceleration in these cars? maybe i could try using so octane booster?

yes, the 6mt and the Infinity service tech said to drive the car normally and not to worry too much about break in. He just said don't take it to 5k until 1200.

I have had an '05 and '06 6mt. Both of them ping almost all the time using 93 gas. They have both done it since day one sometimes it is light, othertimes it sounds like the engine is going to explode around the 4K mark. I have 35K now with no ill effects so far as I can tell.

thansk is good to know! I am trying to use Octane booster to help it. Why would they have designed it that way? seemes like they would have engineered that better.

you shouldn't be pinging if you're usin premium 93+. and break in is under 4k rpm for 1200 mi.

Pinging should not happen on electronically controlled and variable modulated timing...EVER, unless modded and not tuned properly.

so, I guess I should take to another dealer. It's almost like you have to prove, beyond a doubt, that there is something wrong. I have never heard of any high compression car pinging. I am really frustrated...

High Compression engines are usually the only engines that do ping!

Read the owners manual, it states ocassional pinging [even with premium fuels] under load in warm weather occurs and is normal with some fuels.

We all know fuel is not standardized and varies from day to day and refinery to refinery............the HOPE is that various days pipeline fills blend together in the tank farm to create a AVERAGE decent product which doesn't degrade too fast in the time delay from manufacture thru the squirting into cylinder [a few weeks normally].

it almost sounds like a loose rattle sound. I think it would be hard to get a sound clip because you have to be driving and it is not a loud noise but yet Audible

i have it too

I just bought a brand new 2006 g36 6mt sedan, and I have pinging with 93+ octane. I only hear the pinging in 1st and 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd around 1800-2200rpm. I never hear it at higher rpms. I'm at 3500 miles now. I didnt't notice it until after 1000 miles when I started to drive my car harder. but yes, sounds like a rattle. Service tech says its normal. not to worry. Also, there are no flashes for this engine.

Unfortunately US Retail gasoline is such low quality compared to the fuels used to design the engine that pinging occurs.

The addition of 10% ethanol allows real garbage fuels to be octaned up - the test reads ok, just don't perform well in engine.

You can use a cheaper higher blending RON component [ethanol] to raise the AVERAGE OCTANE while missing the mark on EXPENSIVE MON OCTANE numbers.

A single MON point costs 3 times more to increase than a useless RON point!

Simple to test if it is the gasoline, just add 5 gallons of high octane racing fuel which has a high real MON number.
