Rough Start + White Smoke
Rough Start + White Smoke
So I have been storing my car at a friend's driveway while I wait for my condo to be built. Haven't used it for a little over a week and I decide to take her out for a short spin. Went to start the car and saw a plume of white smoke from the exhaust and a rough metallic sound emanating from the engine bay. I just recently changed the oil and confirmed that the oil level was normal. After the first start the car started up smoothly with no smoke or any other issue. Any suggestions on what I should check? Have you guys experienced this after storing your car for a long time? Thanks

White smoke is usually from water/antifreeze entering the cylinders and as it gets burned off turns to steam. Normally has to do with head gaskets and the car overheating, probably an issue your car doesn't have [unless its old and high milage or something]. If the oil didn't look like a chocolate milkshake then there is probably no antifreeze in the oil, but you can check your coolan level for kicks anyway.
You probably just saw light blue smoke. It only takes a drop inside any one cylinder to get a puff of smoke out the back. May just have to do with the PCV system [some FI cars use catch cans to reduce this on startup]. Mine lets out a puff every now and then if I run it hard and then shut it off and don't start it for a week or two.
If this is the first time its happened I wouldn't worry about it. Try starting it mid week and letting it idle for awhile, or take it around the block to get it warmed up completely and then shut it off [instead of letting it sit over 7 days].
Hope it helped.
