Difference between Ceramic and Stainless Headers?

How is it going guys? I was just wondering what the difference is between the ceramic and stainless headers? Obviously the appearance is different, but is there a performance difference? Which one would be wise to go with? I plan on having the jethot coated if that matters.

Alos, when i have the jethot coated...what temperature coating should i have applied? How hot do the headers get? Would 1300 degrees be enough or should i go higher?

Hi, I had my exhaust manifolds coated(not by Jet hot), along with the turbo housings. I noticed a difference in heat by the gauge itself dropping about a notch. I know that there are numerous companies out there to have this done. As far as actual temp to apply or how hot they get I have no idea, but the next time I do send something to get coated I going to go to Swain Tech. Good luck!

Stainless steel is just a material and nothing else. But it does resist corrosion

Peformance coatings can also be tailored to do this. But they can also be designed to reduce temp radiation and help keep exhaust velocity higher inside the pipes (helping performance just a tad). Coatings can also be applied for appearance considerations also.

This is 100% correct and as what temp to apply the coating I would leave that up to the company's that know how to apply their coating. Jet Coating
has been in business for many years and knows their product and guarantees
the work they do.

So is there going to be any benefit buying stainless steel headers and having the jetcoated vs buying ceramic headers and having them jetcoated?

There would be a benefit of coating ss headers w/ a thermal barrier coating.

ceramic headers? Headers aren't made out of ceramic. If they are already ceramic coated then you need to read the maker's lit about their reasoning behind the ceramic coating. Sounds like a type of therma barrier also.

ceramic headers are usually made from steel and coated with a ceramic coating.

What does the ceramic coating do exactly?

isn't ceramic headers better for dissipating heat? I think stainless have better airflow, cuz of the smoother surface.. I'm not sure, so don't quote me on it

If stillen's headers are mild steel vs SS, then the ceramic is there for corrosion resistance. But it might also feature a thermal barrior. But it depends on what type of ceramic coating.

Sean that took 2 sec in google. But you should ask Stillen what or who's coatings they use.
► THERMAL BARRIERS

Chromex ™ Ceramic Exhaust Coating is the most popular kind of coating on the market today. This type of coating (metallic ceramic) is used by more companies and manufacturers than any other material. It is extremely popular on exhaust systems, where the high luster finish provides a very attractive, durable surface. The high temperature characteristics of ceramics have been combined with metallic frits to create a coating that can withstand metal temperatures in excess of 1300° F and provides 5000 hr. salt spray protection.

A truly unique coating that is based on a water/solvent system, it may be applied to a variety of surfaces and metals such as exhaust system components, brackets, valve covers, hinges, grills, suspension parts or any metal part that can withstand the 500° F cure temperatures. It polishes to a high luster, stainless/chrome appearance that will not rust, and is especially effective as a hard protective coating for aluminum parts.

Satin Ceramic Exhaust Coatings are the most advanced exhaust system coatings available. They are a very durable ceramic-reinforced coating available in various shades. When properly applied, it becomes the most effective thermal barrier coating available, increasing performance while extending component life, and has been tested to over 2000° F without lifting, cracking or flaking.

Here is what they said

I have a question concerning your headers for the 350z/g35. I notice that
you advertise both a ceramic and stainless steel version. What exactly sets
the ceramic headers apart from the SS headers? How come they are cheaper? I
plan on having the headers jethot coated to help keep heat out of the engine

bay, but can you jet hot ceramic headers? If you can is it going to benefit
me at all to purchase the SS headers of the ceramic if i plan on having them

jethot coated anyways?

Thanks,
sean
Dear Mr. Flynn,

Thank you for your inquiry!
Our ceramic coated headers would be similar to Jet Hot coated.
As for the price difference, it is determined by market value.
Our ceramic headers are made from mild steel where as the stainless is made
from stainless steel.

If you purchase our ceramic headers, you will not need to get them Jet Hot
coated. However, if you decide to get them Jet Hot coated, the ceramic
coating must be stripped first.

Hope that helps!

Just a note, we are offering FREE GROUND SHIPPING on all Stillen headers
this month.

Best Regards,
Margaret Lo
