Stalling issue on a 2004 coupe

I have had my 04 coupe for a few months now. I have noticed this several times now.
When I am driving a little harder than usual and then put the car in neutral the tach jumps around in the very low rpm's and it has actually died on me a handful of times. It died on me twice on the way to work this morning but when I tried to duplicate the problem it wouldn't happen again. Its almost like the ECU knew that it was going to happen and compensated for it.

The only thing done to the car is a Stillen cold air and Z tube. I highly doubt this could be causing it but am not very familiar with the advanced OBDII systems. My first thought was that the car was getting too much air and that the mass air sensor could not keep up with it, but thats just a guess.

I am taking it to the dealership this coming week to get it looked at. Should I take the intake off and install the OEM one just in case it could be the mass air sensor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

usually that happens with cold air intakes..the air gets too turbulent for the MAF and it does end up stalling

i dont think it would happen with the stillen intake though

Why would that cause a stalling issue?

Could be the intake turbulence, but I saw a similar post on Freshalloy and here's my response:

- Intake & Fuel injectors - How many miles on the car? Have you had the intake and injectors professionally cleaned (not just the Redline fuel system cleaner)? You may also have a failing injector, though you would probably feel that at idle. My 300ZX would occasionally stall out when one of my injectors started going, but it wouldn't always run rough. Then it eventually failed completely.
- I know our cars have in tank fuel filter, but you might want to have that changed.
- MAF sensor
- Electrical connectors - have you checked these (i.e. connectors to MAF, throttle body, injectors, etc.) for moisture/corrosion? My experience with Nissan connectors shows them to be susceptible to corrosion due to high underhood temps and/or weather.
- Check/change the PCV valve and hose
- Check coolant level and condition, and thermostat
- Crankshaft Postion Sensor could be bad, or the conector to it could be bad.
- TPS

The car has about 35,000 miles on it and the intake is brand new.

The injectors have never been cleaned since I have owned it.

A fuel problem may make sense. I have yet to get over 22mpg and I know that I should be getting a lot better than that. (or should I?)

Almost always, and I mean 99% of the time, it is the CAI. Do a search, and you will see it time and time again. One thing I've seen is it isn't necessarily the CAI air turbulance as so much as the oil on the filter or both. Put your old intake and filter back and I'm pretty sure the problems will go away (assuming you didn't gunk up the MAF).

It is the CAI. DID you reset the computer?. If not do it OR just give the car a few Hundred miles to get used to it.

as far as mpg, 22 isn't bad. my 2004.5 6MT got 24 mpg with the stock tires. when i put on the heavier piaa super rozzas, my mpg dropped to 22-23 mpg. is yours a 6MT or a 5AT?

Hmmm...unlikely to be an injector problem then. And 22mpg is pretty good - I've never gotten much above that myself. MPG depends on your driving - mine is 99% city, and I rarely get above 16mpg. No V6's do in 5-10 mile repeated trips.

Sounds like the CAI or an electrical/sensor/connector issue.

I did reset the ECU after the intake but not till a few days after. This problem did not arise till about a few weeks after I reset the ECU.

Well damn.. I guess I will be taking the cold air off before I take it to the dealer then. I really hope it isn't due to that. I really love the sound from it.

it could be caused by a dirty throttle body.
