Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

Hey Guys. Before I send my pulleys back, I need some help here. I have heard good and bad about underdrive pulleys. I have the complete set. Or should I just get the crank one? And the others are just for looks?
Even read a post about it, but not too much feedback on them after installation on the G. I do have about a 1300 watt stereo but have 2 caps. Probably would not bother it to bad, just have to keep the foot on the gas a bit more when jamn' at idle. SO QUESTION IS: Is this worth it? Long term and short term (keep in mind). What does everyone think. I just want to know from people that has installed them and what they think! Or is it just not worth the bang for th buck? ie: couple horses, etc. Help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

I still haven't got my crank pulley yet but I'm looking forward to it. From what I've seen and read, it's good for a few h/p and worth the install. Check out the recent thread about a dyno b4 & after ---- HERE.

I've also heard that just the crank pulley will free up power, and that the other 2 are just for dress-up.

My dealer recommends one. Just be sure it's installed properly (as usual)

Re: Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

I had a infiniti dealer install mine it took them no time with no problems or questions. The dealer was amazed by the weight difference between the UR pulley and the stock one. The stock one was heavy. I will do another dyno when I install my plenum and hi-flow cats next week or so. I didn't notice any strange noises from the pulley or belts nor did the dealer tell me it was a bad idea I did ask. If you have a 5at you will notice the torque when you floor it within the 2500- 3000rpm range due to the torque converter. I got 243 ftlbs without the pulley then got 295ftlb after the pulley. I plan on going somewhere else to get another dyno since the place I went to usually dynos modified stangs. I want to just to see if the #'s are close to the same. Oh, and by the way I just have the crank pulley.

Re: Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

Most of the HP gains are from weight savings. Only 15% of the HP increase is contributed by underdriving, and the crank is where all the underdriving is done. The accessory pulleys are stock diameter, but of course, they are much lighter than the stockers. I seem to recall one can get a crank pulley that is the same diameter as the stock crank pulley. In this case, all HP gains are from weight savings alone. You can even get a crank pulley larger than stock, which in some applications, will *overdrive* a supercharger!

Dsskyline,

Please tell me this is a typo... "I got 243 ftlbs without the pulley then got 295ftlb after the pulley."

You're saying that you gained 52 ft.lb. of torque? I've read the claims by UR and they only advertise 5-12hp MAX, the torque would most likely be less.

Re: Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

If you look at the dyno graphs and #'s in my recent b4 and after dyno threads I made on the 18th. The 243 was my peak due to my torque converter when floored between 2300 and 3000rpm before the pulley then it jumped to 295 after the pulley install, but if you don't look at the peak and look at the peak after that big jump I'm between 240 and 245 of torque, but I did gain 8 to 10hp so there is a good gain with this mod.

Dsskyline,

That sounds great! What brand of Undrive pulley did you buy?
Was it Infiniti that installed it for you? How much did they
charge for the install? I want one now!

Re: Unorthodox Underdrive & Acc. Pulleys Question.

I have the Unorthodox crank pulley and yes I had a infiniti dealer install it for me. I think the price was a bit much $230, but all the shops I went to they wanted to charge $100-$150, but have never done it before I didn't want to risk the shops doing a trial and error on my G. I took it to the dealer to ensure it was done right and had the proper tools for the job. The shops I went to said the install would take a couple of hrs it took the dealer only 1.5 or less and told me to bring it back if any probs!! Yes, it would be cheaper to take it to a shop only if they know what they are doing that risk is up to you. If you decide to get this mod you will enjoy it I have the actual #'s b4 and after posted in this section enjoy. No probs or strange noises as of yet.

Have any of you guys who have the crank pulley's done oil analysis?? I have heard mixed things, not about the VQ, but about the Honda B motor's and engine/oil failures in the crank?? I want to dress up the engine bay on my G, w/ some polished pulley's but dont want to kill my warranty nor my car!!

go back about 1 month on this forum. somebody did an oil analysis with awesome results. he posted a pic of his results. i'd look for you, but it's late for me. i'm getting my crank pulley installed, after i get my car back from getting a body kit painted/mounted (january). if you're still contemplating it by then, let me know, i'll give you another opinion.

Thanks jasperg35, I know I read the crank pulley is the one providing the performance, other's are simply for dress meaning they wont affect performance, nor warranty?? Or is it best to remove the OEM pulley's and have them polished/chromed?? Most ppl will prob. say to replace OEM since aftermarket is lighter and prob. cheaper alternative??

I am also thinking of the Unorthodox set. Does anyone have a pic of them installed or a DIY?

But you have many more mods than just the pulleys.
