Regular Gas
Re: Regular Gas
While my wife's Expy was waiting for replacement tires (another tire recall) she drove the G. After a week of driving it dawned on me that I did not tell her to put premium in the G. When I asked if she had to get gas she admitted she filled it up with regular gas (87 octane). The still had 3/4 of the tank left when I started driving it again. There was no pinging or and noticeable performance problems.
Even though there were no problems I still run Premium.

Surfhound,
The computer will compensate if there is any pinging, but so you know I drove a loaner for a few days and put regular in it just to see. No pinging or anything, could not tell though if there is a performance difference.
Merlin.

Re: Regular Gas
What do you do if you live in California, where the Premium gas is 91 octane and anything higher is virtually impossible to find?

There is an article on the Nissan 350Z in Oct 2002 Sport Compact Car.
On page 81 there is a Dynojet graph on comparison of 91 octane vs. 100 octane gasoline.
4HP and 2LB-Ft Torque increase when using the higher octane.
Artical can be viewed here: http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/fe...cc_350znissan/

Re: Regular Gas
re: "the manual say only 91 or lower are use for temporary only."
What page in the manual?
On page 10-3 the manual says that (paraphrasing) "In most parts of the North America, you should use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 or 91. At high altitudes (>4000 ft.) it says you can go as low as 85.
Sounds to me that if it doesn’t ping, don’t worry. If you are on the track (where 3 or 4 H.P. might be a big deal) use the best stuff you can buy.
I run 91 just on principle.

Re: Regular Gas
Modern engines won't ping on slightly lower grade gas - the ECU will compensate for the lower octane. However, the compensation will result in lower horsepower. Note that the ECU can only compensate so far, so if you give REALLY screwed up gas (like some ridiculously low octane) you WILL get pinging/detonation.
Nissan ECU's are notable for their sensitivity. I would stick with the octane rating the manufacturer recommends. The engine has been tuned for that octane, and you will get the best performance and mileage.

Re: Regular Gas
I have compared 87 ocatane to 93 octane (from Sam's, no less). While 87 provides good performance I think 93 provides noticeably better performance (not great, but noticeable).
Mileage? I can't really tell a difference. I have read that since higher octanes are less volatile (harder to burn) that the mileage should be better, but I cannot tell so far.

Re: Regular Gas
Okay, I was waiting until someone posted this.
Here is my experience so far.
I been using either 76 and cheveron premium since I had the car. I've been getting about 315 miles, and on a good tank, about 340, with 80% city driving..
About 3 weeks ago, the dealer owed me a full tank of gas, and they use vallero premium, and let me tell you, I felt a big difference in response time, and in my milege. I basically got only 280 miles on that, so that was horrible, and It felt a little underpower..
And recently, they gave me a G for a loaner car, and of course the dealer uses vallero premium , and OMG...what a difference.
Their was a huge delay, probably from 1/10th of a second to about 3/10th of a second, and tats huge when ur trying to pass a car...The reponse on the vehicle was somewhat off and it felt like the car lost power...
I never knew that it made a difference in gas...
I had roughly around 5000 miles and the loaner had 7000 miles
So IMO, use premium, cheveron or 76. I mainly go with 76. Just a little note, I had my friend that never drove the G before, drove mine and the loaner and they could tell the difference, easily...

Re: Regular Gas
I have to say that I haven't noticed much of a difference between brands at all. ARCO is virtually the same as 76, same as Chevron, etc.
I do 80% highway driving (on a non-congested toll road) and I get 280-300 miles per tank at best. And I use 91 Octane all the time.
Go figure.

Re: Regular Gas
My manual says 87 or higher for the sedan and 91 or higher for the coupe.... unless I'm reading mine wrong...
and 315 mi with 80% city driving???? I get 275 with about 60% highway driving.... I hope it's because I've only gotten 600 miles on it......
