Help - Engine Noise

Hoping you guys can help. I am relatively new member to forum and because I travel quite a bit have not been actively involved. So, I have a question. I have a 04AT Coupe with approx 114k....highway...regular oil and maint...last couple of days have noticed when I start car there is clicking noise from engine...it was intermitent and I did not really pay attention to it. That was until yesterday. As I was driving started to hear the clicking noise...as I would accelerate..noise would increase in pace...not louder or softer...just would vary with speed....I am wondering if I could possibly have and oil consumption problem. I read in the threads that this is common on 05 and later but no mention on 03-04....or....could it be something else....I have not checked oil level (hate that dip stick location) and plan on doing after work....have been travelling today and want to let oil settle to pan...I also don't want to take to dealer so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Checked oil level this morning and appeared to be quart low. After adding, still making noise. I fear it may be more serious. Engine performance does not seem to be hampered but that darn clicking noise sounds like a piston or something hitting against the the wall of the cylinder. I think I'm going to go ahead and take to the dealer. I do not know of any other shop here in San Antonio that I would trust.

Yeah, the light duty [rings and bearings] design made it to 114k what more could one want?

Careful with oil level as every component is more sensitive to exact oil level perfection. Hopefully something simple like wear in valve shims.
