RT cats collapsed

Just to let every one know...if you are thinking of RT cats ....think again....15 to 20 have collapsed on My350Z alone , not counting any one else .RT says they will not warrenty the replacements if you can get them to replace .If you have headers they more than likely go bad . I couldnt get some thing else fast enough so I gutted mine and put them back on

Couldnt afford it when young...gonna play when Im old
Edited by booger on 06/12/04 07:14 PM.

Re: RT cats collapsed

By colapse what do you mean? Is the honeycomb material inside of the cat falling apart? Please help!

Re: RT cats collapsed

Or that honeycomb is fused/melted. There are some pics on MY350Z. Doesn't look good.

Re: RT cats collapsed

wow, this is really disturbing. I've been really itching to buy a set of those cats since they look to be the best flow & sound.

does anybody have more info?

I guess I can still buy a used pair and just gut them. then the filter shouldn't be a problem anymore

Re: RT cats collapsed

The inside of the cat looks like the middle of a piece of cardboard [wavy material] and its rolled up in to a bundle . The middle falls out and the rest [the sides] collapse over the top of the rest . Hope this pic loads

Re: RT cats collapsed

YEah , it seems as though some cats are badly made, others are not. Out of ~200 pairs sold my performance nissan, around 15-20 have come up bad. So you do the math on the percentage. THey alsmot always fail within 5K miles (if not much sooner). It seem as though if you go beyond that mileage and yours still work, then you have the good ones. RT's quality control isn't good, but I believe it is an all-or-nothing scenario, if you got the 'good' ones you are fine. I had mine for about ~6K miles now, so it looks like i'll be fine - but who knows. It is fact that THESE cats flow the absolute best, almost as good as straight pipes.

Re: RT cats collapsed

Wow, I'm glad I read this post! What a coincidence... I telephoned with questions last week, got the name of the Canadian distributor (not far from where I work) and was going to order a set from them this week.

Now I want to wait and see what's what.
So as the back pressure builds up do you slowly lose power? Or does your engine suddenly die on you as the exhaust pressure gets too high?

I assume this is just with some of the RT cats specifically? Or is this a design problem for Crawford, Kinetix etc. high-flows too??

Re: RT cats collapsed

glad i got the xerd headers instead of the dc sports/rt cats (more expensive too for dc/rt)...

i'm running a stock y-pipe... anyone know if the meshy/matrix inside the stock y-pipe like the headers is 'meltable'? i'm going to a jic when i have the money.

gurgen... hope ur gonna run straight pipes with ur p.e. tt... the heat will be even more for the rt's to take.

Fluffydot,
I didn't know you were interested in a set...
I was also looking at the Crawfords, and maybe now I'll go that route.
They're $449.50
I'll PM you (or talk to you at the next meet) before I buy, and if you're interested maybe we can save a bit -- at least on shipping.

Re: RT cats collapsed

When you play with cats, remember when they fail and you sudden let off throttle the chances of broken off particles backflowing into the exhaust port is higher, same when you turn off engine......grind, grind, crunch.......cylinder scoring and ring wear.

Only 50-100k life will tell you if you made the correct decision, good to 5k still leaves a long time to fail.

Re: RT cats collapsed

....note to self: Never let off on the throttle.

Hoping that my Crawford decision will be the least risk.

Thanks for the knowledge Q.
