Did a compression check on the engine! Results!

Hey Guys

I thought that I should do a compression check on the engine before the turbo install begins. Before I give you the results, here are the norms as given in the FSM: 185psi/normal, 142psi/low, 14psi/max difference b/w cylinders,

Here are MY results:

Cyl: Compression:
1 205
2 200
3 212
4 200
5 210
6 200

After 32000 miles, all my cylinders are above 200 psi (where 185psi is still considered normal and only 142 is considered "bad")! Given that I ride the tail off this engine, these results are superb, especially when you consider what this car has been through, including running on a pre-production ECU for 3 weeks while mine was in Japan, the detonation that it encountered when I went with the first revision of the T/C, etc, etc. The results are a testament to how well these engines are built, in my opinion. We'll see exactly how well after a few months of TT use...

Thanks for confirming that you can beat the snot out of these engines and they just keep on workin' and well I might add.

I beat the crap out of my Maxima for 150,000 miles and I did not have any cylinder below 165-170.

I would like to see what a few months of the turbo does, so please keep us posted....

Curious, what is the compression on a car with no miles on it? Does anyone have any compression tests on a brand new car? Thanks for the post though Gurgen. I have a 1995 240sx sitting in the garage with 150000 miles on it and it's compression ranged last year between 175 and 182 for all four cylinders! I beat the crap out of that car. That was after running NOS on it for 1 year.

excellent compression numbers gurgen. i'm sure that these motors can withstand alot more than speculated given the proper fuel and tuning, good luck with your project!

A word of caution... Do not play with the boost. Keep it at the factory setting and be happy with what you've got. I know of a VQ35DE that exploded (many fist sized holes in the block) due to poor tuning. Unfortunately I attended the tuning session, and the owner never made it home.

Fortunately the Greddy TT was not harmed, but the engine is a total loss.

More details will follow, after the lawyers are done playing...

Very Nice. Have you been running synthetic? I have been running M1 5W/30 since 2200 miles and I now have 37000 on it. I will do the comp. check before my TT install. Decided against the vortech, too much parasitic loss. TT is WAY more efficient. By the way, does the TT system you are installing have a 2 minute oil recirc. timer delay after engine shutdown? Just wondering since heatsoak into the turbo bearings is an ageold problem. Not as bad with modern synth, but still not so good on bearing life.

Re: Did a compression check on the engine! Results!

Hey Guys

Sorry that I wasn't around for the past day, I started a thread and took off...hehe

Anyway... I AM happy with the numbers, especially after Vince's confirmation. One other thing though. I was supposed to crank the engine with at the time of the compression check with the gas pedal fully depressed so as to allow more air to enter the cylinders via a fully open throttle plate. I did NOT do this - an obvious disadvantage if anything. It is nice to know that in spite of this, i still got the numbers that I got - so I am indeed happy.

Now to answer some of your questions:

The major one: the TT install. Trust me, I am VERY VERY anxious about this! Todashi and the rest of the TS team are finishing up a race car; in addition to that, Todashi has been ill all this week. That's what held up the start of the project. But rest assured that it IS beginning. He will be picking up the kit tomorrow (most likely) and we can start the install shortly thereafter. I WILL take a lot of pictures, including all the parts before the install, and the installation itself at various stages, that is before I get kicked out of the shop for being such a PITA! hehe

As far as 'beating the snot out of it' is concerned, allow me to clarify. I do ride it REALLY hard, or I should say I DID until the last 5K miles when I moved to S.F. (I am sure that is self-explanatory - you know... the absence of real roads...). Even then, I did give the car a go about every other time I took it out for a 5 block run to the supermarket. HOWEVER, I DID keep up with the maintenance religiously, especially the oil changes. I ALWAYS (from the very first oil change at around 3K miles) used Mobil1 5w30 full synthetic and did NOT allow it to go beyond 4K miles. With exception of one time, I changed the oil every 3000miles (+ / - 300 miles). So, the good compression numbers are a testament to how well the engine, or rather the piston RINGS will hold up and keep the cylinders well sealed, provided the [synthetic] oil changes are done regularly. Also keep in mind that my raised redline of 7200 rpm (TS ECU flash) is approached (~7000K) routinely when I drive aggressively, and I have bounced off the rev limiter MANY times (I am sure more than 50).

I will be doing a compression check a couple of times a year (hopefully with every 2-3 oil changes), and of course I will keep everyone posted.

I have no idea what the compression is on a new car. But do we really need to know, as the rings have not seated yet and the engine hasn't been broken in? What would be great to know is the compression of a newly broken-in engine with about 5K miles. Although, if you ask Vince (InfinitiTech), he will tell you that these engines are still being broken in for much, much longer than that (maybe he can chime in also and explain that).

Neffster,
I have been researching the many adventures of "FI-ers" on the 350z boards... I am very familiar with it. That is why I am NOT using the $2K cheaper Greddy TT Kit on this car with the unreliable e-manage solution! The tuning on this car, I can promise you, will be state of the art, with NO piggyback computers of any kind! I will go into more detail at a later date in the appropriate thread. This is also the reason why I have been waiting for over 4 months for this kit! Also, let me guess, the tuning that you attended has been done on a dyno correct? That is NOT the way to do it. Of course they can be helpful, but they cannot fully simulate the real world loads on the engine, not to mention the airflow through the intercooler at higher speeds. Road testing is the only way to reliably do it, even though it is a lot harder and more time-consuming.

Karlhungus...
I agree completely - if I do it, I have to do it right! TT is THE way to go. That is why all the TTs have about equal numbers of HP and torque (400-370 , or 360-340) whereas with SCs you see a ton of torque being lost to spinning the blower (390-310 hp-tq is an example of this - as done recently by a member). I am hoping not too see the latter on my setup; i shouldn't if logic/history/science is any guide. Keep us posted on your TT. Also, PM me, we can talk further on the particulars of our planned TT setups - you know, we can compare notes and stuff.

Was this from central florida dyno day?? I didnt hear about that.

I would also like to know the compression of a new G. Anyone out there got info?

dabomb,
When you get back from vacation go to one of the Friday night meets and I'll fill you in.

For those going FI, best wishes (and I'm jealous).
