The future of the VQ, how big or how high can it go?
I wasnt sure where to put this, its more of just an open discussion kind of question, but I didnt think it really fit in the future models area.
Basically my question is, what do you think the future holds for Nissan's VQ?
It's been around for more than 10-yrs (I think), it doesnt get the best MPG (nor the worst), its grown from 2.5-3.7 liters, and it already revs close to 8000-rpms. Will it go up to 4-ltrs and drop it revs, will it just be paired up with hybrid systems and then die off. Nissan seems to be in a fight against Porsche on 6-cylinder displacement (both are always getting bigger, more powerful, more efficient). I wonder how much longer Nissan is going to hold off on direct injection?
Like I said, I'm just curious what some of you think...I'm watching Road Warrior, it seems so appropriate to think about the future of something.

It already goes to 4 liters in the trucks. Nissan has been using DI in certain VQs over in Japan since the late 1990s. They've also had a VQ30DET (turbo) there since the late 1990s too. I don't know what the exact hang up is with bringing DI to the States. I guess they're kind of like GM. They hold off on technology until they feel the need to "one up" someone. DI on the VQ37 will add a solid 20hp and increase mpgs by 10% or so. I'd imagine it will be here soon.
Like Dave said, it's already been punched to 4 liters. I see DI being the next upgrade and maybe 4 liters for the passenger cars. But this motor isn't the smoothest thing out there. I don't ever see it growing over 4 liters. The hold up on DI might be gas quality or holding back.
Look at BMW, they went back down to 3.0 liters and went turbo.
I see the VQ going the way of the do do pretty soon. It had a long development life and served Nissan/Infiniti well.

Yea I don't see the cars getting a 4L
The 3.7 would be cool in DI definitely give the car that extra juice and a tuned/modded car with DI will be pretty fast.
I want to see Nissan make a V8 version of the VQ, Not like what's in the titan (what's that a 5.4?) and use all the same tech but two more cylinders. That thing would pump.
