HID question

Why is it bad for the headlights to turn on and off quickly? In my '00 I30 whenever I go under an overpass sometimes the lights will turn on when in auto mode. Is this gonna be bad for the G35 or has Nissan put in a timer which will keep the lights on longer to give them time to warm up? Also, how long exactly is the warm up time?

I already did a search on the forum for this but could not find an answer. :>

Re: HID question

Well, yes and no. HID's like and bulbs or anything involving power doesn't like to be turned off and on quickly, as it effects long life of the device.

How ever, HIDs do better being turned on and off, than a regular tuscan bulb. There is no warm up time that would effect the life of the bulb, but turning them off and on isn't good for them either.

People get more touchy about hid bulbs cause they are a pain in the @ss to replace and so expensive.

Re: HID question

one question: Why the reference to HIDs when we don't have HIDs in our G35s??? All we have is Xenon bulbs. The HID kit has to be imported from japan for something like 1300 bucks.

Re: HID question

xenon and hid are used somewhat synonimously. Xenon refers to the actual gas(es) that are in the bulb. When you run enough current/power through them, the gas ignites. HID stands for High Intensity Discharge, which again is the same thing as xenon lights.

Re: HID question

mamboking: what the hell are you talking about? We have HIDs, w/ xenon bulbs, in our G35's. I don't know what you have in YOUR car!

Re: HID question

yes we have HIDs and yes it's bad to repeateldy turn them on and off. It's hard on the balast and bulbs becuase they have to initially spike the voltage (I think the start up voltage was something rediculous like 25,000 volts) to excite the xenon gas to illuminate since there is no fillament like in a regular bulb.
