Hmm... Sleeving & Stroking?

I have seen a few power adder combinations for VQs that will produce peak output of 400-hp or so. Much like everyone here, I have studied the relative merit of common bolt-ons, including NO2, turbochargers, and superchargers. Obviously, there are some reliable options among that group, assuming proper tuning and so forth.

I continue to seek more information and advice about sleeving our engines. Sleeving would cure most of this engine's open deck issues and provide an infinite array of final displacement options. We could overbore our newly sleeved cylinders and safely stroke 'em out. We could instead choose to reduce both bore and stroke, establishing a sturdier foundation for higher boost and cylinder pressure, perhaps as high as 55psi.

I've read two articles recently, each of which ascribes to a different school of thought.

One article described a 4.3-liter stroker kit that will allow our naturally aspirated engines to produce a claimed 400-hp. (The article made no mention of changes to fuel delivery, timing, nor any other related tuning issues.) I was fascinated by the benefits of sleeving that were described by the author. This stroker engine was claimed to be capable of a turbocharged 1000-hp with -- among other improvements -- the provided forged pistons, rods, wrist pins, and crank.(!)

The other article described a new Nissan GT-500 car with a VQ-series engine that had been bored to 3-liters, with both smaller bore and shorter stroke than our VQ35DE's. The TT engine on this new GT car made a claimed 465-hp and over 510 ft-lbs of torque. No boost information was listed, but I bet it's more than 8 psi!

Anybody care to comment?

Re: Hmm... Sleeving & Stroking?

Yes, the company was AEBS. I was seriously considering the NA approach. Anyhow, i still like the approach but the stroker kit was just too expensive..... Also, to obtain the ~400whp you needed more than just the kit. IN addition you would need Tomei cams, Nismo Headers, Exhaust of course, Fuel pump, and Technosquare ECU. To make a long long story short the kit didnt work. I just heard from a reliable source here in San Diego that the kit was just too big. They couldnt even get the crank to turn....i guess back to the drawing board, but i doubt AEBS will give it another go considering the amount of money they have already wasted on the kits the already manuafactured.
So peps know the standard stroker kit was to include: Pistons compressions varying for application, sleeves rated at over 50psi, Rods with oil cooling channels built in them, And a NHRA crankshaft.
If i get the money and the urge to tinkle with my motor....i'll have to stick with something less drastic. Rods, Pistons, Cams, ECU and headwork including valves and springs. However, i doubt i'll be doing that soon.

Re: Hmm... Sleeving & Stroking?

Yes, it was AEBS who had the stroker kit. It does not surprise me that one would need to make provisions for extra fuel delivery, adjusted timing, an ECU reflash, extra cooling, etc. I was surprised there was no mention of these critical points, neither in the article nor on their website. It's strange that they're promoting their kit if indeed it does not work!

Anyway, sleeving/stroking seems to be such a great choice: Increase both horse-power *and* engine strength in one fell swoop. I wonder if Darton can pull this off...?
