New clicking noise question

Ok, so I call my dealer this morning to get the axle torqued down just like everyone else. I get the tech on the line and he tells me that torquing the axle is unnecessary and that the clicking noise is the axle "settling in". He then says it will eventually go away and to not waste a trip since the noise is, in his words, absolutely nothing to worry about.

I did mentioned that most people I spoke to had this procedure done and he said they could do it, but the noise would soon return and not go away completely until the axle has "settled".

I almost bought what the guy was saying until he mentioned the open rear that the car has, which I'm pretty sure its not an open rear end, or at least it doesn't drive like it.

Before I call back and start in on these guys, has anyone else heard this? Or has the noise returned after getting it fixed?

I have not had this done as yet. But a call to my dealer got a "come in and we will take care of it" When I mentioned "settling in" I got a "huh"

Wait...Are we talking about that LOUD clicking noise that you get when you stop your car...After some miles driving...Sounds like its coming from my rear axle too...Is this safe? Or is it a must fix type thing?

Its that noise that u can hear with the windows down when taking off or stopping, some people hear it when shifting gears but I don't. I hear it from the minute I start moving, no delay.

Re: New clicking noise question

I have that noise for a couple of weeks now. It sounds like its coming from the passenger side. Its noticable from about 0-15mph. Its really annoying. I'm going to take it in on Friday for the clicking and 2nd gear being a pain in the A$$.

Re: New clicking noise question

Did they also tell you that the "settling in" time period was about the 70,000 mile mark (after expiration of drivetrain warranty) ??

Re: New clicking noise question

I have this problem as well. The axle has splines on it and it sounds as if its slipping out of place under load. This seems to be a common problem, but no one can give us a straight answer. Which ever dealer/tech said it has to settle in is full of ****.

Re: New clicking noise question

I had the exact same problem. I brought it in to the dealer and they replaced my rear axles. The rear axles were making the clicking noise.

Re: New clicking noise question

I don't think it's settling mine didn't start till 18k. I brought it in and the dealership told me that the first batch of G35 coupes that came in did not have enough grease in the hub. something like that. So they took it apart and packed it with more grease.

I just thought BS but drove away. the grease or them taking it apart helped for probably 1 day. Then the clicking from take off came back.

Same problem here. Dealer said its the rear axle and that the axle shafts need to be replaced. Said they've been seeing a lot coupes lately with this problem.

Re: New clicking noise question

My axles were clicking pretty bad and so I finally made an appointment to get it fixed... The earlist they could get me in with a loaner was in about 2 weeks... I went to a meet this past Sat, but was going to pass on the canyon run cause of the clicking... Ended up going anyway and about 30 mins into it I noticed the clicking was gone (I was driving it pretty hard)... It's Wed now and it hasn't returned... I'm keeping my appointment just in case it returns, but as for now it seems to be fixed... Go figure...
