Mobil1 0w40 is the only true mobil synthetic. And just for your info most synthetic oils are not true synthetics.

You can, or you could go with a different synthetic, like Amsoil or German Castrol.

If you're out of warranty, folks have had success with Mobil1 0w-40.

My G is in warranty and I'm using Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (German Castrol) and my engine runs quieter and smoother when compared to Mobil1 5w-30 (SL rated) left over from my stash.

and is mobil1 0w40 isnt that thicker? i live in ny with hot and cold, hope that helps..

dam buying a used car sucks sometimes

Since you want a detailed answer, you have to give more information.

You did not say it was a used car in your original post.

Information needed:

1) How many miles on car?
2) Is it under warranty?
3) When was original in service date?

To answer your question regarding going back to dino if synthetic has been been used. I would not and that is the concensus I've seen.

I use Castrol Syntec 0w-30 mainly because from what's been posted the web, here and other places, it's a very good oil for the G's engine and my car is still under warranty. Mobil1 0w-40 has been reported to be very good for the G's engine as well.

I don't know if you know what the oil viscosity label on the oil container means but here's a link for you to read up:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-e...uestion164.htm

If you want to read up more, go to BITOG. That site is for oil nuts.

Bottom line is the lower the first number, ie. 0w-XX or 5w-XX, the thinner the oil at 40 degrees celsius. Same goes with the second second number, ie. Xw-30, Xw-40, the lower it is the less viscous the oil at 100 degrees celsius.

However, a 5w-30 Mobil1 oil versus a 5w-30 Amsoil or some other oil will most likely have different viscosity since the API I believe has an allowable range of viscosity for each grade, ie. 5w-30 of oil.

So, in order to stay under warranty (hopefully) viscosity wise, I'd prefer to be a bit thinner at startup but be at the required viscosity of 30 at the "hot" end.

The Mobil1 0w-40 is reported to be a very thin 40 weight but I do not want to be denied engine repair/replacement if I ever need it since I used a "thicker" oil.

Now as to cost, it ranges from roughly $4-7 per quart for Mobil1 0w-40 or Castrol Syntec 0w-30, Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 (which is pretty good according to folks) depending on if it's on sale. It goes up from there if you chose to use say Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, Enos, Motul, Total, Pentosin, etc.

I'm in Northern NJ.

Good luck.

Thank you som much for taking your time and answering me!

I just bought the car @ 61k miles and i don't know the maint. on it, but the last owner told me that he payed 65 dolloars for an oil change, i am assuming that is synthetic, and i just purchased warranty from the dealer for the next 3 years, up til 96k miles,

now time to do more research!

I don't' think there's any issue with switching from synth to conventional (there are myths about that causing leakage, gasket damage, but that's just because the car was in poor shape to begin with), but why would you? Just go synth and don't look back. With their extended drain intervals, they are little or no more expensive and protect and perform better in the meantime.
