Re: New Engine to Play With

Hehe if I just think about stepping on the gas my tires break loose now! I was talking to Doug (from Crawford Z) and he was telling me some guy launched his Z at 6,000 RPM with slicks and got about 6" before his rear axle snapped.

Ouch.

I think the rear end would do ok, considering that.... What kind of tranny upgrades are availible?

Re: New Engine to Play With

How about an "all natural" exercise?

Stroker kit, intake, recalibrated MAF, ported throttle body, plenum, cams, 3-angle parabolic valve job, 1mm oversized valves, heavy-duty valve springs, higher red-line, headers, hi-flow cats... But no shredded trannies.

Re: New Engine to Play With

Well, I've been thinking about it more and more....

I want to reuse as much as possible to keep costs down. This is my every day driver and I do have limited funds to dump in to it, especially considering how much I've already 'invested.' If I just rebuild the interals with all forged products, upgrade the cams, do the head work and reinstall the Procharger at higher boost I should be able to stay in the $5-7000 range, well below the $8,000 stroke kit and more performance. I dunno... I'm picking up the engine later this week, I'm excited!

Kevin,

does the engine come with stock cats? If so, can I buy the driver side cat 02 sensor off of you? I need it. Was this from a coupe?

The cats weren't in the picture, so I doubt I'll get them, but if I do I'll let you know.

Re: New Engine to Play With

I would pass on a stroker if your going to stay with the supercharger. Forged internals and proper assembly will keep it running for a long time, provided you have no detonation. Choose your compression ratio based on how much boost your planning and then decide on a cam. Cams for superchargers require different valve timing vs turbos.

Re: New Engine to Play With

bullseye

All N/A producing the same power will be no different on teh tranny than FI producting the same power.

The mods you described would probably yield mid-high 300's at the wheels, no dfferent than an above-average FI

Re: New Engine to Play With

Maybe you can sell it and make a good profit and use those funds to go forward with your plans above.

I just can't help but picture a new VQ35 sitting there, waiting for an old 240SX... ...or 240-280Z body for that matter.

If money wasn't an object, I'd say keep it stock for when you blow your boosted motor.

Re: New Engine to Play With

??? I'm dynoing at 380 now. If I forge everything, and raise the boost from 8psi to 15-20 psi I would hope I would break the 500wrhp barrier.... I gained approx 150 wrhp with 8lbs of boost, can I expect 150 more with another 8lbs? I'm not exactly sure if boost is linear or not.

Thanks!

Re: New Engine to Play With

I just spoke with Procharger, they said if I an build the engine they can make the boost... They claim to have pully combinations that will spin the blower all the way to 91Krpm. The max blower rpm is 80,000k! I told them I want to run between 16-20 psi and they said no problem.

Re: New Engine to Play With

Well, I am sure it's not perfectly linear. But no, even if we assume that the efficiency with which you produce the "first" 8 lbs of boost equals to the efficiency of the subsequent boost raise, you will not make the same additional power b/c you are lowering the static compression ratio of your pistons. You need to look at the effective compression ratio, that value will be more "linear" to the amount of power you can expect:

ECR = effective CR

N/A (10.3:1) motor: 10.3:1
8psi of boost (on stock 10.3:1 motor): 15.9:1

but....
N/A (9:1) motor: 9:1
8psi of boost (on 9:1 motor): 13.9:1
16psi of boost (on 9:1 motor): 18.8:1

You calculate teh ECR in a pretty straighforward fashion: ECR=[(psi boost/14.7)+1]x(staticCR)

There you go...

Re: New Engine to Play With

Wow, thanks for the info, that will help out a lot.

What do you think the results would be if I stayed with 10.5 CR pistons and ran 16lbs of boost? Of course, all interals would be forged and built well.
