New Engine to Play With

Well, with only 7500 miles on my car, and less then 1000 since it was Procharged, I came across a deal to buy a used VQ35 engine for a great price (~$2000). It has 7500 miles on it also, and is supposedly in perfect working order. I haven't seen it yet, but I just CarFaxed it everything looks like it should, for a totalled vehicle. I've seen pics of the engine and tranny and they look brand new.

My question is - What should I do with it? I would like to increase the hp higher then it is now, by increasing boost. But, in order to do that I must sell my Procharger and buy a tt. Besides the stroker kit, what can be done to the internals of this engine to make it bulletproof?

Oh, the deal also included an auto tranny (for more money of course) any one interested in having a 'spare' one let me know.

Re: New Engine to Play With

forged internals
8.5:1 pistons

JWT cams
JWT Twin Turbos

dont have to replace the bumper for the JWT cause it uses two intercoolers.

Re: New Engine to Play With

In addition to forged conn rods and low compression pistons, sleeve it with Darton ductile iron, baby. Our open deck design permits easy casting, but also allows deflection under [boosted] load. Too much boost = cracked cylinder(s). Nested sleeves will prevent deflection, improve cooling, and make cylinder scoring a non-issue. Good luck.

Forged niternals definatley. The Pauters seem the best rod choice for now. I would target 9-9.5 for CR IMO if you intend to mostly street the car. If I had the this block I'd ship it ot SGP and let them do the shortblock work.

I think you should play with air flow and stuff with port and polish system to see what we can do to get more air flow.

Re: New Engine to Play With

Kev,

You can also deck the motor to strengthen the "v" construction. Yo don't really need to sleeve this motor as it already is (albeit with a very thin iron layer).

Now.... here is my list for the ULTIMATE SETUP:

AEBS stroker kit with 8.5:1 compression option (4.2L) with custom cams (specifically designed for the turbos - JWT are a good but not ideal option) and the PE TT kit. You can expect to go through a few trannys with this... as you are likely to make over 700 wheel hp at 17-20 psi.

Re: New Engine to Play With

I'm not sure if I want to go with that low of a compression ratio. I am now thinking about just replacing my current internals with forged internals and keeping my Procharger. The Procharger has the ability to produce 24psi, so I could up the boost and maybe upgrade my intercooler to help get rid of the heat.

So, forged pistons (between 9 and 9.5 cr) and rods, have the block resleaved and maybe bored slightly, maybe some head work done, and a new cam? Then throw 20psi in to it?

What do you all thnk?

Re: New Engine to Play With

you'll still be going throught trannies pretty quick.

9.3 is ideal to me... just not aware of anyone making such pistons.... Are you? Do they need to be custom made?

Re: New Engine to Play With

No, I'm not aware of any. I'm hoping I can find some though. If I'm going to get forged internals I might as well get something that I really want! Trannys are over rated anyway!

How long do you think the rear end will last?

Re: New Engine to Play With

I think the rear-end would be the least of your worries, as long as you don't mount racing slicks to the car. I think your street tires will break loose/spin before the rear-end breaks, don't you?
