The octane number stickers on the pump are meaningless Marketing wishes, all they tell you is a higher number is higher than a lower number.

Blending in ethanol [at the local tank farm] has allowed the refiners to produce really defective grades and make them appear better thanks to the 2.2 -3.0 octane point boost ethanol adds [SOMETIMES].............cheating the standard test under PERFECT conditions.
I agree, my performance varies on each tank of gas I get..sometimes i knock, sometimes I dont..so lame

all 6MTs do this, it is a known issue with the transmission. Noises can be deceiving

Does anyone have this rattling problem in lower revolutions when accellerating? I get a rattling noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear when accellerating when the RPMs are between 1,000 to 3,000. After 3,000, it goes away. Infiniti dealer says it might be pinging from low octane but i'm not convinced. I'm in CA and highest octane i can get is 91. Anyone know if this is really because of the gas and not something else? Engine oil level is fine. Thanks.

dkimg35, I have the exact same issue. Engine was replaced once for oil consumption, but the new one is fine. I always use 93 octane and still have that annoying rattle when accelerating under ~2,700 rpm.

My engine was replaced. Didn't do it for about 2k miles, but now it does it all time. Never heard anything about it being the transmission. It sounds like definite engine ping.

I have a 2008 M35 Sport, and my problems are similar to DKIMG35 and LUKEM80. It tends to show itself when it's hot out, and my front windows are down. Even more noticeable when I'm driving next to a building, or anything where the sounds can reflect off of. I took it to the dealer this morning, and I just got a call back stating that it was the fuel damper. They said the part or a related part was defective and was rattling. It sounds like engine knocking to me, but that's what they said. I'm picking it up after work, and will post an update after I drive it........ next to some buildings

I eventually sold this car.. but I did go to the track to watch a buddy of mine race.. while I was there I bought one gallon of 114 octane gas.. poured it into the tank and filled the rest up with 93 octane....

guess what? no pinging at all.

too much timing in the stock tune..

maybe mods like air intakes.. exhaust mods.. lean it out some to cause it to ping?

good luck guys

Good point... too often people think they don't have to retune their car after mods. Some mods, especially test pipes and/or headers, can cause a dangerously lean condition.

So is this common with the 6speeds? I just bought another 2003 g35 coupe, but it is a 6spd instead of an auto. I hear a wining noise, which im not sure is normal (2500-4500), I forgot what a stock G sounds like. My automatic G had exhaust, intake, spacer, and a tune. I never really noticed a wining noise or valve tick (valves only slightly at idle). On my 6spd the valves really seem to tick while under slight load from 2500-4000rpms. Is this normal or...?
