OBD Code Reader

Has anyone used AutoTap on their G35?
Any info on how you have used it would be appreciated.

Re: OBD Code Reader

I use this one by Equus. Seems comprehensive enough and not expensive:

Re: OBD Code Reader

I went to Autozone once to have my CEL read and found out that they sell the reader they use at Autozone. After it sucessfully shut off my CEL I bought one, $99.99 and it works for every OBDII car to read and reset CELs.

Re: OBD Code Reader

Thanks to all for the replies. I was specifically thinking about AutoTap to hook up to my laptop because it seems to be feature rich. I just got reamed by a Ford dealer for my wife's minivan because she forgot the gas cap one time. $130 to reset the idiot light!!!

I will never let this happen again, but I was hoping that whatever diagnostic tool I buy would work equally as well for both Fords and Infinitis LOL

They sell enhanced code packages for the American "Big 3" but nothing for Japanese cars.

Anyway, I will not be "F'd" again by any car dealer to hook up a scan tool and give a command to turn off a light!!!!!

Re: OBD Code Reader

The AutoTap reader looks cool with many features as well as "File Logging & Playback", and compatible with many brands of rides.

At $200 for the palm, it's a little more money than my Equus, but with added features and playback, I'd say good value.

Let us know what you decide. I'd be interested to know how well the AutoTap works.

Here's another product: <a href="http://www.digimoto.com/order.htm">Digomoto</a>

I don't know well it works as I don't have one.

Re: OBD Code Reader

Potom-,
You don't need to buy one of these just to reset the idiot light. You can do that with an ECU reset. Other than that if you have an Auto Zone near you they will check the light for free as often as you'd like.

Not good for people that do frequent mods maybe, but perfect for the usual, "mod here and there" type of thing.

Re: OBD Code Reader

I'm more concerned with not getting ripped off by Ford dealers than Infiniti dealers at the moment. "Knowledge is power" - especially when you're dealing with people that want to seperate you from your money...

Re: OBD Code Reader

I use the CarChip - works great and is small enough to keep plugged in to keep recording data...

Re: OBD Code Reader

I have the AUTOTAP USB version with enhanced GM software.
I primarly bought it for the GMC truck diagnostics and the G35 secondary.

The software shows a fair amount of decent data and code readings with reset but I wouldn't buy it just for the G35.

With my conversations with AUTOTAP I asked whether a enhanced software version would be available for Infiniti/Nissan and they were considering it. If enough people request it, they will build it.

Overall, in my research for diagnostic tool, I found AUTOTAP fit my needs the best and it is the premier diagnostic tool available with the best R & D team for the future upgrades(flame suit ON)

The second best would be AutoEnginuity's ScanTool availble on E-bay. A bit more expensive and less flexible than AUTOTAP
Everyone else is just a code reader or a poor imitation.

I have the AutoTap Serial version, and it won't work with my G35, but works with other cars =/

I just ordered the T16-008 ($145 for adapter and cable) from http://www.multiplex-engineering.com/products.htm. I'll be trying it with http://www.qcontinuum.org/obdgauge software for my PalmOS (treo 600) and PC. Will post results. Might take me a while with the treo since I need to order a serial hotsync cable. Gonna also try and see if I can hack the CAN network on our cars.

I have the Harrsion RD ODB-II scan tool. It's been great and I believe I paid $130 for everything. The software is constantly being updated and it's free for life. http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/obdscan.html

Hooked up in my old Maxima:

Screen shot showing graphical bar graph display:

I find this scan tool and any other similiar scan tool a must have for the DIY'er. I bought this primarily because there's no way to retrieve codes on my wife's 98 Subaru Legacy GT. Subaru charges $70 just to look at a code. Now I can pull up the codes and I can also view nearly every electronic function of the ECU/motor. This scan tool has worked in a 96 Accord, my 96 Maxima plus 8 other 95-03 Maximas, my father's 04 Sienna, my 03 G35, and my wife's 98 Legacy. Another great use for the scan tool is it can tell if mods are actually working because you can log the amount of air entering the engine. If the amount of air doesn't increase, your mods aren't working. It's as simple as that. Recently I used the tool to log intake air temps after removing the "power duct" cover.

And before anyone begs the question, NO, you cannot alter your ECU with this unit. All you can do is monitor and log data, view trouble codes, and clear trouble codes.

I bought the ACTRON CP9135 and works great! I paid about $140. It tells me exactly what the problem is.
