Tronic Tips

I just recently purchased an 04 G35X, I have never driven a manual (I know I know its better) anyways I am just wondering if there is anything I should keep in mind while shifting with the Manu-Tronic function, I guess something that the manual does not touched base on. I just don't want to ruin my tranny but I would like to use that function. I know a few things....like not to red line it and avoid engine breaking.

There's nothing really to watch out for. I red line and engine brake all day long.

Canadian in Las Vegas huh? How did i miss that...

Oh, and I agree. I have mine in Manu-Matic frequently. I redline it all the time. no problems.

When you are accelerating, don't let off the gas when you upshift. Just keep the pedal constant.

My other car is a true manual, so i'm use to lifting off the gas between shifts

Not to jack the thread but can anyone comment on the downshifting part, I know if you leave it alone it automatically goes down to first gear. What is the best way to do it by yourself, because sometimes when i downshift the car it sometimes jolts ahead and other times it slows down("braking", or downshifting the car instead to slow it down instead of actually using the brakes).

When i come to a stop, say in 2nd, i either let the car downshift for me, or wait til i am almost at a stop or crawl.

It's kinda like a true manual where you really don't want to downshift into 1st to slow down. With a stick, you run the risk of dragging the tires from the engine braking.

As said before, brakes are cheaper than transmissions

Try to remember when it's the smoothest and when it's not smooth at all. The only time I can say I really downshift is on the freeway, so I only go down to 3rd, never to second... and it will probably never be smooth going into 1st. The smoothest downshift will be while you are still on the gas (again, like at highway speed)... it won't ever be butter when just downshifting without pedal pressure and engine braking.

Upshifting, there isn't much to it. Like someone else said, don't lift, but sometimes I lift and shift at the same time ONLY if I'm done playing and don't plan to romp on it again (and by "at the same time" I mean shift, then lift, almost simultaneously). Don't bounce off the rev limiter for an extended period- I used to bang for about a second crossing the quarter mile mark because I didn't want to shift into 4th 100ft before the end. And don't ride high RPM's for long (5000-6000 range) as it's just hard on the engine and then when you go to shift it's going to lunge or bang.

As far as going between drive and manual mode... doesn't matter. You can flip back and forth whenever you want. Again, some just may be smoother then others. I find if I'm cruising in 4th around 3000RPMs and then put it in drive instead of upshifting to 5th and then putting it in drive it kinda jolts, or bumps, a little more. Also it seems smoother if you put it into MM before giving it any gas, like say to pass- shift it over before giving it any gas instead of giving it gas, then putting it into MM and making it downshift to 4th.

In any case... don't worry! Have fun!

pretty much perfectly said. Only comment i want to say is when downshifting, there's really no "need" to downshift under 3rd unless you're doing twisties or rally driving when your downshift will be much higher revs.

Also - dont forget when youre in full auto... I'm in MM so often that many times I shift into neutral (thinking I'm up-shifting in mm) when its in auto

yup no worries
they wouldn't have MM if it was really that harmful
general rules apply, like no neutral drops or bouncing off the rev limiter 24/7
but other than that, you're fine so just mess around with it and have fun
