Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
I believe Neffster was going to install this?
I want a Y pipe to see if that will satisfy me and not have to go the entire cat back route. I don't want to have to store a stock exhaust in my garage.
I'm wondering if there's any gains with just the Y pipe and stock exhaust. Any change in exhaust note?
Seems like JIC is the only real option to mate to stock diameter.

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
I will try to make an effort to have the Y-Pipe installed tomorrow. Been extremely busy lately and to be honest I don't expect to gain much (if anything from exhaust mods after the cats). I also decided not to order the Fujitsubo Exhaust. For me, it just didn't make sense. WOW, ~5hp across the board for ONLY $845! I'd rather save the money than spend it that way. (Then again, I've lost about 20 lbs. myself so I now need a new surfboard ).
I'll try to remember to IM you with the results after ~2 weeks of break in.
Also, I suggest doing a search for the exact measurements, but the JIC's diameters are larger than the stock exhaust for sure. Since the abrupt change is after the O2 sensors, I'd imagine there would be less than 1/8 of a hp loss due to the difference (how's that for a SWAG?).
It's funny, but the more I learn about the G35, the more Q45tech's comments about modding seem to make sense (to me at least).
My recommendations are still to add the Z-Tube, Plenum, and cats, but I'm not too sure if the other mods are worth the money. Maybe a lightened flywheel and clutch when the stock goes out, but I think that'll be it for me (until the warranty runs out AND the car is paid off...)
Also, AL503 was running the JIC Y-Pipe and the Stock Exhaust for a while. Maybe he'll chime in as to the "feel" or "any changes" in sound/performance.
The above statements are only my take on the issue. If you disagree with anything I typed then you are 100% right!

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
thanks, neffster.
I put in the z tube today and I like the change in sound. Is throttle response more crisp? I don't really know or care at this point. I just like the sound which is good enough.
I'd do the plenum and cats, but I'm waiting on a better plenum alternative (APS sounds promising, we'll see) and same for the cats. I need to put cats on that I will be comfortable won't collapse. for some reason I'm under the impression the ultimate cats may be hardier, but who knows why. I'm waiting on time to tick by before I do the cats to see if the crawford or ultimates start failing.

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
I was running the JIC with the stock mid pipe and muffler for a while. To be totally honest, I couldn't tell any difference in tone, db's, or even performance. It was around this time that I could start breaking the car loose (with VDC off of course) from the 1 - 2 shift. Previously, I couldn't get more than a chirp. This could be explained by several things besides the y-pipe, (tread wearing out on the tires, engine breaking in more, etc.) but the y-pipe has (relatively) proven gains from many sources so I'm sure that it probably helped a little.
When I installed the JIC, I took my dremel tool to the lessen some of the difference between the different diameters. I was able to grind away maybe 1/8" to help the transition. There was still about an 1/8" difference.
I eventually added the GReddy SP2 muffler which lowered the tone and made it ever so slightly louder. After that, I installed a nismo mid-pipe to get rid of the difference in pipe diameter. The nismo mid-pipe did not seem to change the tone or db's either.
The y-pipe weighs about 5 lbs. less, the SP2 took off just over 21 lbs. and the mid pipe was about the same. Hope this helps.

where did you get your greddy SP2? what are your sound impressions? thanks

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
I've come to the same conclusion as Neffster. The exhaust just isn't a good value for my mission. I too recommend the Z tube, plenum and cats as the best bang for your buck. I will however address the wheels when the tires meet their maker. An 18/19 pound wheel, 18" ought to put me below 14 seconds at 55 degrees, 400 ft alt., ie. the equivalent of 100 pounds weight reduction or 10 more ponies. (another WAG).

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
I am in the same boat with Neff and ~fish. I got the ztube/popcharger combo and looking back I think the best I got was a little more aggresive sound from the exhaust (not complaining though) and spotty accelaration. Then I did the cats. It smoothed the accelaration. Then I did the plenum and boy oh boy did my G came alive. Best bang for the buck. I love the sound note from the exhaust as well. I have ordered a Fujitsubo Y pipe look alike for $200. Let's see what that does, but I am not expecting much from it. If anything it will be cosmetic change since the stock Y pipe is kind of ugly. Then again, how many people get to see my G35 from underneath??
I was considering the headers but I am not sure that if the exhaust opens up too much (less back pressure) that it can work against me in torque. Besides, even though DC headers can be had for $400, I'd probably need another $400 for installation cost. I don't think I can tackle that one myself.
Like fish said, the next mod for me will be some light rims and tires. Did I mentioned good looking as well!!! From there, I am done until I win the lottery and I can put in a supercharger. (crossed fingers!!!).

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
Sound is a couple/few decibels louder and deeper than stock just cruising around. At WOT, it's fantastic. Much deeper and noticeably louder in the upper RPM's. I got it for the tone and the fact that it drops a lot of weight off the car.

Re: Anyone have the Y pipe and stock exhaust?
i installed the 200 fujitsubo replica Y pipe on monday. i did my standard 0-60 runs a day later (because even if it makes more power on the dyno, i am interested in real world results), and it was .11 seconds faster.
take it for what it's worth.

I put my stock 5AT on the dyno with the Unlimited Tuning Y pipe and it made about 6 HP at the wheels on a very hot & humid day. There are some gains but nothing major.
