Whether you have a drop-in or cone, how long before you clean? Recommended cleaning is after 50k? Seems like way too long. Been thinking of cleaning mine now (~7500) miles. Any comments?

Only one comment, I've decided to clean my oiled filter once a year (over the Christman brake). THis will be about every 12-15K miles. That way I can take it off one morning, clean and re-oil it, and set it on some newspaper for a day or two to make sure that any extra oil drains properly.

I agree. K&N recommends every 50K miles. They claim a slightly dirty filter actually performs better. I think I cleaned my last K&N cone filter twice in 80,000 miles of use. Unless you're operating your car in an EXTREME environment, like daily drives through heavy road construction areas where the road surface is covered with fine dirt/dust, I'd leave it at that.

I guess that depends on how dirty it gets, and how quickly, but basicly I watch the colour. The dirtier it gets, the darker (blacker) it becomes, covering up the original green, blue, or pink colour of a clean, oiled filter.
I don't wait until the original colour is no longer visible. To me that's too late.

It's hard to judge how much oil to reapply to a clean filter, but I put just enough on to recolour the pleats, and rather put too little on than too much. As Neffster suggests, it's prudent to let it sit on something to soak up any excess.
As you prolly know, the oil is not friendly to MAF sensors, and can ruin them quickly. That's expensive. [img]/w3timages/icons/tongue.gif[/img]
