I have a noise towards the front of the engine when it on and sitting. I'm about 95% positive its a pulley/belt related. I'm going to be replacing the belts soon anyways but i've been trying to locate which pulley is it.

It was too cold for me to attempt to engage the AC compressor but i still attempted and noise level was the same. When i move my steering wheel, the noise gets slightly higher.

Pretty much its going to be the idler pulley or the PS pulley. I just cant exactly figure out a way to isolate one or the other to pinpoint it. When i do pull off the belts a simple spin and feel test is all i gots up my sleeve. I figure maybe one or the other is more commonly replaced.

There is a DIY for idler pulley delete with a smaller belt install. Anyone have methods to isolate pulley noises
Is the sound you're hearing like a faint bearing noise, mostly heard during cold start idle (louder) and during warm idle when in an enclosed area like a garage, etc? If so, my 03 has the same noise and has had it since I bought the car 5 years ago. Shortly after buying the car, I took the car in to fix the noise. They said it was the power steering pulley. They replaced it, as well as the belt, but the noise came back a few months later. The noise clearly is coming from a pulley. On my 03, the mechanical fan is attached in the location your idler pulley is. My guess is it is probably the mechanical fan/idler pulley; however, at least on my car, the problem hasn't gotten worse over 5 years and 56K miles.

YES and no.

my VQ30 was silent in the area i just confirmed it. doesn't have that pulley. people on my350z stated the pulley was there for your 03 models and then they droped the fan but didn't remove the pulley till years later and then there are VQ35's without it from the factory.

i knew the noise is about a year old. doesn't get any worst. i cant hear it while in the car. after i did my oil change i looked into the noise. I would have to agree i feel its either PS pulley. I'll have to look into getting a spacer made, maybe i'll leave the bracket on and pull off the wheel.

Old thread but ... I had what I decided was a noisy idler on the alternator side of our '06 so I bought a replacement idler (the adjustable one) and had the shop remove the redundant mechanical fan pulley as described above. That fixed the noise for me and I thought losing that pulley made the fan belt pulls appear more ... balanced? ... so we did it to the wife's '05 on it's next service. (Yes, his and hers Gs.) I got the spacers here:
