PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

ok guys, this is an update thread:
for those of you guys with aftermarket pulleys, please answer a couple of questions to help out the community:

1. how many miles have you the pulleys on your car?
2a. have you had any problems?
2b. if so, what problems?
3. are you happy with them?

~11K miles
No problems
absolutely

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

Now I'm not getting into the debate about whether a/m pulleys will be a problem or not.

However the real test will only be time....a lot more time. Really we're talking about fatigue and wear effects that may not manifest until 100k miles or more (or less too). Unfortunately our cars are just not old enough to have the mileage on them to draw any decent conclusions.

True... but thank God we have "test dummies" that are voluntary... THANKS GUYS!

I've had my UR crank pulley on for about 6K miles and am loving it! No problems, the extra power is great.

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

What was the issues with these pullyes? No damper correct so the engine vibrates more?

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

If you go to maxima.org or whatever maxima site is good - you'll see that this is a non issue more so than any other mod. hundreds of thousands of miles and no issues. The engine is internally balanced and no one seems to be able to sense add'l vibrations from the belts which wont have the rubber dampner on the crank if the stock crank pulley is replaced.

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

As I indicated in my post reply, there are/were NO ISSUES. The crank pulley is a piece machined from high-strength aluminum, having much greater inherent balance than the cast iron piece that it replaced. I don't know what your reference to "damper" is.

Yeah actually neither do I. So there are no issues... cool maybe I'll get them. What was the HP increase on the 6MT coupe? 5HP?

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

I'm repsonding to Malx. And you are correct - no issues - I would bet there is measurable less vibration so based on hogwash I hear - the naysayers would be better off with the billet cut pulley rather than the stock one!

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

The vibration that is discussed in regards to harmonically balanced or damped pulleys is not due to the pulley imbalance or belts. It is due to the torsional excitation of the crank with each piston power pulse. The theory is the torsional stresses applied to the crank causes fatigue over time and can cause a failure. Some manufacturers put harmonic dampers and balancers in the crank pulley to reduce the torsional stresses thereby increasing the fatigue life of the crank. Some engine's have them some don't. The need is related to the crank design, ie mass, stiffness, material properties, number of main bearings, \ etc. If they can design the crank such that its stresses are below the material's endurance limit then no damper is required. If they cannot then they can add the damper to reduce the stresses - I assume to be below the material endurance limit. Then theoretically crank fatigue will never be an issue. Where some modders get into trouble is if they replace a damping pulley with a solid one.

Re: PULLEY UPDATE miles/problems?

the only issues were the claims of the "experts." but their arguments were so strong at the time that it changed the views of many a potential pulley modder.
that extra power is so damn addictive though. its not really a hp gain, but more of a faster rev, better drivetrain gain, such as changing your flywheel.

this keeps going in circles...someone says the rubber dampner is for belt vibration and then someone says it's for internal vibrations which I think most of us agree that nissan made the engine internally balanced..in fact theres an article i saw somewhere during one of these threads.

Essentially it's illusive the reasons not to have one IMO. It will help if someone would just prove us pulley guys wrong..until then the adamance of the arguer seems to rule reasoning.
