weight reduction?

I've searched and can't seem to find any topics on weight reductions.

I can't get over why the G weights over 3400lb? The only thing I can think of to remove of significant weight would be the rear seats? Of course, there's always the option of getting lighter wheels, but aside this, I can't seem to seem to think of what else to remove.

I'm sure people has attempted this so let's hear from you.

Re: weight reduction?

seats, all the plastic pieces you dont need such as dash, doors, all the sound dampners in the doors and trunk, that piece under the hood, engine cover. lots has to do with the longer exhaust i think.

Re: weight reduction?

Get a 350Z. Better yet, an S2000
You can drop a good amount of weight by getting new wheels, flywheel, pulleys, straight pipes, and exhaust

Re: weight reduction?

If you want to maintain a "neutral balance" you'll want to drop weight from the front 1/2 of the car. I *think* the coupe has a 53/47 weight differential. If you start removing the spare tire and tools, changing out the exhaust, ripping carpet out of the trunk, removing the back seats, etc... you'll just be throwing that balance off even further. I wonder how beneficial the weight reduction would be with the increase in front to rear weight distribution???

High flow cats and the y-pipe are 2 mods that will drop a little weight (maybe 20 lbs together). These are 2 good mods for performance increases as well. I guess you could drain your windshield wiper fluid and save another 8-10 lbs. The lightened flywheel, mentioned above, is a good idea but other than that, what else is left in the front 1/2 of the car? (FYI, I haven't forgotten about CF hood and bumper, I just didn't mention it because CF isn't much lighter than our thin aluminum hood and plastic bumper).

Re: weight reduction?

If I got my fat a$$ on a treadmill, I could take 20# off of the car+driver weight.

Re: weight reduction?

Besides a lightweight flywheel, and pulley, you can take the engine and battery covers off. I also only use about 6 or 7 screws for the underbody diffuser since it helps my change the oil quicker anyway. You can also get a lightweight optima battery that is around 12 lbs. less or those dry cell batteries (can't remember their name) that are around 20 lbs. less. Better yet, move the battery to the trunk to help distribution.

Besides those mentioned above, a lightweight exhaust can shave 25-30 lbs. Lightweight wheels can shave off 10-30 lbs (which you would then multiply by ~4 because it's rotational weight which has a much greater affect.) If you have the brembos, you can get the stoptech 2 piece rotors that will shave of just over 10 lbs of rotational weight.

With the above, you're looking at effectively loosing 150-200 lbs. Taking the spare and the rest of the contents of the trunk will get you another 50+ lbs.

Re: weight reduction?

I'm with al503 on this one for the most part. No reason to strip a luxury-sport coupe down to nothing, so keep your trim, sound deadening, etc. and just take out the weight from where you can and where it counts. Keep your spare and jack and save yourself some hassle down the line, or just remove it for racing only. As was mentioned, you don't want to take a lot out of the rear anyway.

But If weight reduction is a big deal to you (within reason for a $35K luxury-sports coupe... ...it will be for me ), then go for the titanium exhaust and save a good chunk of fat. That slight bit of weight loss in the rear isn't going to be too much and a good swaybar will do wonders anyway.

Carbon Fiber hood and trunk aren't going to save a ton of weight, but there is supposed to be 20lbs between the two.

Seats! Ulphoster some good Recaros to fit in visually and replace your mounts as well and that's probably an easy 15-20 pounds per seat from a great location. Plus it saves you from having to lose it from your own ***.

Wheels/tires! Exponential savings just like with other rotating mass.

... ...You know, it's starting to sound better to just add the weight of a supercharger.

Re: weight reduction?

thanks for the responses.

These are all great things to consider. Except maybe for the low carb oil...

The weight distribution greatly helps me decide which mods to consider for weight reduction and effectiveness.

Re: weight reduction?

Actually, the new Lotus Elise is 1,975 lbs. but still the lightest go-cart street racer I've seen (I test drove one about 2 months ago as my brother has one on order and should be taking delivery Summer '05 ;-) Everything in that car is super light weight and there's nothing in it except the steering wheel, thin, uncomfortable racing seats, slim pedals, a/c, and a basic stereo...that's it.
