Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

FYI, a member on FA is warning that Infiniti is blaming the side-marker blinker mod as a cause for BCM/ECU failure - $1500 repair out of warranty. Post by 'arf0puff' is here.

BS. The dealer just wanted to find a way out of the warranty work and charge him for it.
I would be there right next to the mechanics as they show me how the blinker mod could cause all those issues. And I would have to believe it b4 I would even think of paying them.

If i were him I would be taking it to another dealer for a third opinion.

doesn't seem totally out of line, everything is controlled by the computer these days. If you take a look at the wiring schematic for the G35 just about every thing electrical goes through the data bus at one point or another. That is chicken **** of the dealer to blame it on the parking light mod though.

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

I looked at the electrical diagrams on the G35C.

Side marker is controlled by the BCM that is true. BCM send signals to the ECU, but the signal has absolutely nothing to do with the lights. (air conditioning & blower) The BCM certainly has nothing to do with the fuel sensor or fuel cut mechanism. Sounds like a bunch of BS thrown out there by frustrated technicians.

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the blinker mod just have it so that you fan out a wire that's supposed to only go to the turn signal to now go to both turn signal and corners?

The only way that I could see that this would cause an issue with any control module is if the bulb impedances are way different.

The turn signal is just a normal bulb, right? And what about the corners, just a bulb right? No diodes or nothing?

Are they pretty close to each other in wattage and impedance/resistance?

if the corners were different, spikes in current could cause issues. I doubt that's the case though..

would that be the case if you changed to LED's?

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

not neccessarily.. The only concern I see with LEDs is that they have a specific operating voltage. It depends from LED to LED... but let's just say it's 5 volts for the sake of example, and I'm assuming that the car is trying to put the whole 12 volts over the turn signals... Putting 12 volts over a 5 volt LED is causing massive amounts of current and can cause problems.

Easy solution is a series resistor to limit current.

If there are commercial kits out there with LED lighting meant for cars, they should be equipped to handle 12 volts, but an average person going to radio shack and soldering in an LED may cause problems in the system.

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

Well, the sidemarker mod is not a simple splicing of the 5V wire that goes to the turn signal. I've always wondered about the exact wiring for the mod when the turn signal and sidemarkers are blinking back and forth.

Not quite. What you are describing would be simply wiring the side marker in parallel with the turn signal lamp. But that would cause the turn signal to come on when you have running lights on, which this mod does not do. This mod is very simple from a wiring perspective, but is doing something deceptively more complicated. It causes the side marker to blink in sync with the turn signal when running lights are off, and blink out of sync when running lights are on.

The dealer has to PROVE that the blinker mod caused the problem.

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

I enjoy this mod, would hate to change it back, but just might. Haven't had any issues as of yet, don't really want to have to deal with any more of the dealerships bullshit!

Thanks

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

My official take on it is that I had a bad BCM to begin with. The modification was just enough for infiniti to pin the repair work on me instead of covering it under warranty. I think I am just a freak incident. If this happens to someone else, then I would be concerned.

Re: Side Marker Mod & Warranty problem (from FA)

If I'm not mistaken, there was at least one or two Infiniti Dealerships that were doing this mod on the G35. It would seem that at least some of them don't feel it would be a problem.
