Hello everyone! as the subject states i've been hearing a ticking noise coming from my g35. It's a 04 g35 brembo navi package. I bought this car in april '10 with approx. 97xxx kms on it. A month or two after i bought it i noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine which wasn't there when i bought it. I know the car burns a bit of oil, on the other hand...which G35 does not? but anyways, was wondering if anybody can help me out and suggest what is wrong with it. The car seems to be still pulling strong since day one when i got it. But it's just quite annoying when i wanan hear my exhaust , i hear this ticking along with it. When it's idle, it ticks along with the revs...as i rev higher, the tick is more frequent. Ideas/suggestions?

i went to a infiniti dealer and they tell me it's my timing chain and it's gonna cost me a few grand to fix...and i mind as well just do an engine swap. i have a feeling they are just jumping to conclusions and they don't wanan look it into this and just rather me buy a new car from them. my mechanic says if it's the timing chain, my engine light woulda came on. true?
Others suggested it's the valves. i did an oil change with thicker oil and an engine flush, didn't seem to change any of the noise. still the same. any suggestions would help. i'm located in toronto so if you guys know any G35 specialists nearby, please let me know.

 

from what ive heard, the ticking is normal for most VQ35xx equipped vehicles. My g35 has 81,xxx miles on it and makes a very light tick tick tick sound when idling.

Its the timing chain most likely. Over time it gets warped and stretches causing it to: grind on start up and tick lightly when idle.

Nothing fatal, just annoying more then anything. There was a forum memeber who fixed it, ended up costing est 2000+.

 

thanks for the reply. i was scared that it's the timing chain, but it doesn't grind on start up. i also asked my personal mechanic and he says if it's the timing chain, the engine service light would come on. is that true? i also read around that it might be the valves and they need to be adjusted. but then i heard that vq35 has self adjusting valves/lifters. possibly the valve spring?

 

my '03 has that same annoying tick. Its the only thing I don't like about my car! You can't adjust the valves, you can only check all your valve clearances. Then if you have any out of limit you must order a new lifter the right size. kinda like ordering oversize bearings(kinda). I guess if the timingchain is stretched enough it will "slap" against the guides creating a tick...who knows. I just bought mine 2 months ago.

 

The timing chain really shouldn't be an issue as they don't typically need to be replaced (or advised to be replaced) around 200,000km.

I've read some guys get less ticking using synthetic vs dino. Just a shot in the dark here but I wonder if carbon build-up from OC is also a factor?

 

If you're hearing the ticking during idle and revving in neutral, then the likely culprit is the injectors. That's normal. The injectors on these cars are very loud. Take a long screwdriver and place the metal end on the injector cap and the handle up against your ear. You'll be able to hear the injectors clearly. If you hear it all the time while driving, then it's probably something with the valvetrain and is likely a problem. I've never heard of a VQ having timing chain problems. The only problems I've heard of with regards to timing chains are worn tensioners and that's an easy fix. That issue usually occured in the VQ30 motors (95-01 Maxima).

The tensioners seem to lose all their teeth and sometimes cause the noise. Look it up on youtube, there a videa of a black coupe that makes the tick. Hes the guy who took the engine apart and found the timing chain tensioners where damn near bald and causing the tick. His chain was a bit warped from it. He fixed it and didnt really gain anything... Maybe the longevity of his car has imporved but nothing performance based.

I say just live with the tick, ignore it. But if your engine starts to knock or chatter really bad then thats another story with a crappy ending.

i'm in the same boat...started mine after sitting a few days and its been chattering banging. 100k on it and i baby the damm thing. Def pissed. Oil levels fine and all. Hoping its the cam chain...just not sure how an engine thats seem over 4k only a handful of times in its entire life and synth 3k oil changes can have mechanical problems.

 

woul'dntl cam chain be really expensive? i just hope an engine flush will treat it. but i honestly think something is wrong with the valves. ppl say teh valve springs could be worn?

 

Yup...Make sure its not ur injectors op. I listened to mine very closely w/ the screwdriver and it definently is the injectors. I wonder if I could remedy this issue w/ performance set of inj's. I have a civic hatch race car w/ 750cc RC's and they make no noise,atleast that you can hear. That tick sucks, makes the motor sound like its all s*** canned out. its not that extreme but I hate it!

 

thanks for the feedback. 3 things..where is the injector cap(i'm new to this) and if it is the valvetrain and is likely a problem..what should i do to solve the problem? and as for tensioners...that causes a tick? how do oi fix that? thanks

 

Same thing here. Just bought an 06 with 66k miles. Don't know if I just didn't notice it when I bought it or what but it's super annoying. Very uniform ticking that speeds up with rpms. Can't hear it unless the Windows are down and I'm going slow (exhaust drowns it out).

From all my research it's the injectors but I want to rule out the timing belt. Any diy diagnostics on here for checking the injectors for noise?? I'm a newb and can't find anything for it.

is it always ticking? does it miss ticks? I have inector tick that isnt 100 percent. sometimes it misses ticks sometimes it doesnt tick depending on the engine temp.
