Wow. Finally. I thought I'd never find someone else who describes exactly what happened to me. I was driving my evo when all of a sudden the car backfires LOUDLY, then begins sputtering and dies out completely. I end up getting stuck on the road. I turn the key and after a couple of seconds of cranking the engine is back up and running. I continue driving off carefully and hear a backfire which isn't as loud but the car doesn't die that time. I drive it home and leave it alone. Take it out the next day and everything is fine. To this day, I don't know what went wrong, and I haven't had any issues relating to it so far.

This was a couple days after purchasing the evo from a previous owner. He just had the motor built and rarely drove it. This also happened the day after I filled up the gas from Shell. The previous owner always filled up at 76, but I highly doubt it was caused by the switch from 76 to Shell.

The only thing that can fly out of the exhaust on fire is a piece of the catalytic converter.

I'm sure it was carbon buildup in the cat... cause your gf started the car for a bit and turned it off every now and then right? When you first start any car the ECU runs the motor rich until it warms up to operating temperature, therefore the excess fuel kept building up and never burnt since it wasn't driven out on the road.

Normally it shouldn't have been a problem, only needed fresh fuel and maybe some seafoam like you said you put in already, although what bothers me is that you say something came out of the exhaust after a backfire and IT was on fire? Only thing I would think that could come out as a piece(s) on FIRE is chunks of the cat mesh. :/
It might have been a little bit and not enough to cause a irregularity in the post O2 sensor thus no CEL.
I would keep an eye on more pieces flying out, lol.
Don't want to say it (none of us do), but later down the road you might need a new cat if the post O2 starts throwing shiet at you!

I agree. That flaming piece of debris was probably a chunk out of your catalytic converter. Glad it's still running and not throwing codes.
