When I baught my Max SE in 2000 the dealer said not to worry after the first 2000 KM

Re: Break in period for a G35
youngcanuck,
Congrats on your purchase...
Yes..the break in period is 1000 miles...and don't go over 3000 rpms on the freeway and no constant speeds for a long period of time...
Also, I word to the wise...remember when picking up your car...pick it up during daylight...and remember check the car inside and out....if you notice the slightest scratch...tell them..
o yeah..and welcome to the G35driver.com club...

Re: Break in period for a G35
Thx... Wow keeping it under 3000 rpm will be VERY hard !!
Its a painful thaught what the demo cars go thru before being sold to future customers for a few thousand dollars less the msrp....
Again thx.. ..Do you recommend an oil change at 2000 km as well ?

There are many that will tell you that new Japanese cars don't really need a break-in period. I guess it depends on how long you want to keep your car and whether you want to have some potential long term issues like oil consumption, etc.
Try the link to http://www.driversedge.com/ and read his article on 'Break-in Schedule'. It makes sense to me and is fairly consistent with most of the other info out there. It's the schedule that I followed for my G.

Re: Break in period for a G35
The manual says for 1st 1000 miles, (1) No full throttle in any gear, (2) No trailer towing, and (3) Don't drive at a constant speed for long periods. There's no RPM restriction, but it makes sense to keep it under 4 to 5000. It's not an exact science. I've read comments from senior engine technicians at Porsche and Infiniti who doubt their companies policies on break in, and think you can drive pretty much as you see fit. They've never seen a clear case of premature engine wear tied to improper break-in. That said, it would be very hard to prove it. So the bottom line better safe than sorry and at least do what the manual says.

Thanks.. for the reply(s)...

4 weeks of waiting and 2000km of break-in !!! that is going to be tough..

Can't you just leave it in regular "Drive mode" without using the manual mode for the first 1000 miles? When does the car up shift itself in the automatic mode?(3,500-4,000 rpm?)
I had to drive my S2000 under 5,500 rpm for the first 600 Miles, which I waited for at least 700 miles before I ever VTECed that thing. Most S2000 dyno at 189-198 Hp stock to the rear wheel, my was at 199.8 Hp stock; Now I have 212.8Hp with just K&N Air Charger and VAFC. It's better to break-in properly!
Edited by 850 on 09/05/02 06:16 PM.

Re: Break in period for a G35
I test drove a brand new 2003 Civic Si/SiR hatchback with 23 kms on it and the dealer was sitting next to me telling me to really go for it, so i did. I peeled out in first taking it up to 6000rpm and chirped the tires going into second up to 6000rpm again and shifting into third. I had a blast, but I felt so bad for the car afterwards...da well...i'm not buying it =) LOL
I'd never do that to my own new car by the way. I'm gonna run in the car to about 3000kms and then open it up because you do have to get all the cams, cam gears, intake, cat, exhaust all run thru. It's actually important to open it up after the break in period so that everything works to it's designed task.

Define the technical art of "open it up" for us newbies. I want to get it perfect. I heard that breaking it in soft is bad for you car too. I need this car to last a really long time.

Re: Break in period for a G35
The upshift point in full auto mode depends on the throttle. I will be very surprised to see an upshift at higher than 3,000 rpm if you take it easy on the gas pedal.
Of course, you can always force it to shift at a much higher rpm by controlling the throttle.

The break in period for a G35 coupe is 1200 miles. Remember (1) No full throttle in any gear, (2) No trailer towing, and (3) Don't drive at a constant speed for long periods. Keep the RPMs under 4K.
