pull the ignition coils and use a flash light to check and see if its leaking inside the spark plug tube as well.

I did a write up of a valve cover replacement. The front side of the valve cover actually calls for RTV to create a good seal with no leaks.

Have you tried testing the bolts around the VC to make sure they are all torque down properly?

Oil seeping into the spark plug valley isn't going to cause smoking or an odor. It appears to me that your dipstick may have not been firmly placed into the hole and some oil blew out. My recommendation would be to yank the intake box and pipe, pull out the dipstick, clean everything up, clean off the dipstick rubber gasket and dipstick guide. My guess is oil residue is dropping onto the exhaust manifold gasket. Clean that up as well.

VQ gaskets have a history of weeping, just like most any other car with valve cover gaskets. I wouldn't bother changing them unless they're really leaking. Mine have been weeping since I got the car back in Jan 2005.

I just replaced my plugs yesterday and noticed that there was a bit of oil residue on the drivers side valve cover. Cant identify the source exactly around the valve gasket. No oil in the plugs. I dont burn oil so im thinking its not to big of a deal. Ive noticed this on another ride I had. Never had any problems relating to the slight oil residue .

You need to replace your valve covers. Oil shouldn't be on the plugs Period.

This is a common issue for the VQ or any Nissan cars with over 70k miles.

If you're going to replace, might as well get the new version with replaceable o rings:

I also found a small amount of oil on the driver middle spark plug, while changing my spark plug today, I am glad I found this before my waranty expires in a couple of months.

Same exact problem here. Driver's side only--been doing this forever. Never seemed to bother the engine though.

New OEM valve covers going on tomorrow. Will let you know the results. Hopefully this might reduce my oil consumption as well.

Pathfinder owners say that there is an oil drain in the valve covers that gets blocked over time and leads to similar issues--not sure, but we'll see.
