Why is there a filter on this tube

Just got done installing new Pop Charger / Stillen Z-Tube Intake and took the cover off the engine. I noticed a filter and hose that isnt connected to the engine but looks like it suppose to. The end of the tube that comes out of the engine looks to be plugged. Do I need to put this back together?

Looks like someone rigged a catch can with just a filter. There is suppose to be one prebent black tube that runs from the pcv (go to the filter and run left) that runs to the metal end where you have a rubber nipple covering it. Some people run a catch can there, which can take many forms but I have never seen anyone go this route. Guessing that you bought the car used.

looks like they simply bypassed the crank case ventilation. dunno how effective that would be - you would need to remove the upper plenum to see it.

Wouldnt that uncapped fitting on the lower plenum create a massive vacuum leak?

OP:

Start the car and put your finger over the tip of the metal tube shown in the pic. Let us know if you finger gets sucked onto it.

So what is a catch can for? Yes I did buy it used. Never noticed until taking cover off. The end that comes off the motor (to the right of the filter) is plugged so I didn't get my finger sucked in LOL. Do I need to remove filter and just replace w a regular tube?

The can catches oil blowby and moisture before it ends up back in the plenum. If you do not want to mess with buying a catch can or making one with parts from a home improvement store (https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-...catch-can.html then I would just replace it with a quality hose.

You could purchase the prebent oem part for about $16 or pick up some fuel injection hose, 3\8 if I remember correctly.

Installed catch can

Finally got around to installing oil catch can. After letting it idle to check for leaks then a trip around the block this is how much oil was in the reservoir. I poured into a water bottle because the husky reservoir was over half full. Is this alot of oil?

But what could it be. Could it be just build up cause the oil couldnt go anywhere cause the filter that was on it. Im going to go get some food then check it again when i get home. If it has that much again i may be in the market for a new g.

I drove 2.5 miles then checked the filter again and it was over half full again. I went to the gas station for gas and was wondering if i was burning it threw the exhaust. I took a little video of it.
