Crazy Question ??
Crazy Question ??
I just did an experiment tonight to see how long it would take for the oil to settle so that I can check it after running the engine. What I did was let it sit for 6 hours, checked it and then ran it for a minute and then checked it at certain time intervals until I could read it at it's original spot before starting the engine. After checking once every 5 minutes it took a whole 40 minutes before it checked at it's final position(it also matched the original position before starting the car). I did continue to check it to make sure that it was an accurate measurement. The reason that I did that experiment and that I am asking is because I am having troubles with my engine and I have a hunch that perhaps my problems with the engine are making it very long for the oil to finally settle. Also, I went into the dealership a month ago stating that my oil level was on "L" and that I wanted them to see this so that they can document this. When they checked it they said it was 1/3 qt. low and they topped it off. I thought that was odd but I kind of trusted them. I checked the oil 2 weeks later and I had to add 1.5 qts. of oil to get it to "F". I brought this to their attention and they said that they would wait a little longer for the oil to settle and I asked how long? 10 minutes they said. HUH? If that is what they usually do with other cars and it works. I am wondering if it is because my piston rings are shot. I just need to know what is a normal time to wait so that when they do the oil consumption tests that they are done with a lot better accuracy because they have been checking it lately and they are way off and it has caused problems.
Re: Crazy Question ??
Read the manual I think I read somewhere to warm the car and then let it sit 10mins before making the measurement.
I still don't like this method as it still gives a lot of oil streaks and is all over the place. So I do it first thing in the morning when it is sitting for a while. I think that is the best way for me.

Re: Crazy Question ??
Sorry I can't really give you a good answer, but I do have one observation. In your test you ran your car for one minute. It may not have been long enough to heat your oil to normal operating temp. What this may mean is that the oil might take longer to flow to the pan than a car with oil at a higher temperature.
The Infiniti techs might be doing their 10 minute wait based on a car with oil at normal operating temperature.
