Pulley question please..

Thinking I might buy a set of Unorth pulleys but have a couple of questions:

1) How well do they work? Are they worth the $?
2) Also, the loss in drive doesn't cause the car to run any hotter or charge the battery less does it?
3) How hard are they to install?

Re: Pulley question please..

best mod I've done to date for power. gains are noticeable immediately and throughout the rev band.

I haven't noticed any ill-effects on A/C or with my aftermarket stereo system.

I would save a few bucks and just get the crank pulley as 90% of the gains come from it. Installation is fairly straightforward but if you can find a place that will do it for $70 or less, I'd think about avoiding the hassle of DIY.

are you sure installing pulley will cost only $70?
I thought it would be pretty expensive, since it's hard to install.

my bud had it done for $50 at a garage. I think it shouldn't take a shop more than an hour or so so that's why I said $70.

COPY / PASTED from Teamtransport.org forums

the problem is that there is no data, at all, on this subject. Since Data is something I have some training in, i'll say this:

the part hasn't been on enough motors for long enough to produce a large enough sample to yeild any data thats relevant. Maybe if 1000 of us did the mod and were as diligent as Ted in collecting data along the way, then MAYBE would would be able to see if there is a failure rate, and if there is, when does it "typically" appear.

you also need a control group, or several. You can't compare 1 car with it to 1 car without it and assume to be able to make predictions on how this effect all cars. I dont know too many people who are doing oil ****. like Ted.

what we do have for facts:

* the stock pulley comes with a vibration dampener
* the UR pulley does not
* the service manual warns against removing the dampener
* nissan / infiniti agree with their service manual
* UR disagrees but hasn't completed a study in the manner I have described above to really refute it.
* ted has 7k on his and no detectable problems

and annecdotally:

* that a "few" cars with crank problems MIGHT have had an aftermarket pulley installed at one point
* UR "says" they have never seen a problem

I think like most people, my opinion of "5 theoretical hp is not worth a new crank shaft or motor", seems to be the prevailing sentiment on the other boards.

sorry, someone mentioned data and it made me all gooey inside

Its up to you, how much money do you have? See I wouldn't mess with anything that you can't replace ie the engine. At the same time, if you have the money and a bitchy wife, throw it on. If you FUBAR your engine, time for a SC complete rebuild, 500+HP!

mines even better, ted. my lead levels are 33% of the universal averages and that was with a full track day on it.

Who knows? The pulley may be beneficial for my engine.

He's right, but get shorter belts then what they come with, they become loose and you notice lag in acceleration! I got new belts and no more slipping and its pulling harder than ever, no probs at all and 100% worth every penny!

What About Voiding the Warranty ???

Did none of you guys worry about voiding your warranty by installing the underdrive pulley? It is the only mod I am doing that is directly related to the engine and that could maybe cause serioud problems if something went wrong.

I want to get the Black colored pulley so maybe the dealership won't be able to notice it when they do oil changes and the like.

Is it really worth it? If you live in Houston, what dealerships do not care about mods, as I usually goto Southwest Infiniti as that is where I bought the car.

Thanks.

Jason
