oil
Re: oil
I believe there are a few current synth oil users and a few, like myself, who intend to convert very soon. If you do a search, (I hate saying that) you'll easily find a few threads on this.

Re: oil
At the 3750 mile oil change I switched to BMW's version of Castrol 5W-30 Syntec. My wife's car requires this oil for warranty purposes and I want to use only one oil in my cars. I'll keep the Syntec in for the next 7500 miles.

Re: oil
I went with Mobil One at 4500 miles. Gas mileage jumped up about 5% on the second tank. I had great luck with it in my V-6 88 Pathfinder which I put almost 200,000 miles on before sending it on.

Keep in mind: Per Nissan/Infiniti do not use any oil other than conventional for the first 15,000 miles after that you are free to do what you will. "This WILL affect your warr. if we find it"

Not sure I agree with you here. Got any proof or documentation to back up your statement?
It's a common statement made about synthetic oils for many years but I've yet to see a manufacturer put this in writing.

Re: oil
Besides the fact I don't believe you're prevented from using any API certified oil in your G, I would think the chance of causing some kind of warranty issue by using synthetics would be slim to none. Sounds like the continuation of the old synthetic wives tales to me. The benefits of synthetics are well documented.

Re: oil
Thats a direct quote from Dean service advisor at Pleasanton Infiniti When I asked if doing oil changes myself was ok he stated sure but per Nissan/Infiniti do not use anything other than convental oils" i.e. no Mobil 1, Syntec, Redline" for the first 15,000 miles. "This is to allow the rings to set". Don't listen to what I have quoted but if Nissan/Infiniti is anything like Toyota your oil is being tested when you take your car in. This is to keep their butts out of a warr. coverage fight and put you in the hot seat.

Re: oil
Just got my first oil change done today. I asked what type of oil they used, and the service advisor said they use Pennzoil. Then, without being prompted, he said that if I wanted to go to synthetic, like a lot of G35 owners are doing, he recommended I purchase the oil and bring it in, because they have to buy synthetic at retail and mark up the price.

Re: oil
When did you get your car?
I picked mine up in December 02, and page 10-5 says "INFINITI recommends mineral based oils." This is also what the current manual that you can download says.
But it doesn't say "requires."

Re: oil
Even Service Advisors and technicians are guilty of spreading myths. We think we should trust them because they work for the dealer, yet we often find that we know more about our cars than they do; TSB's are a prime example, many members on this and other boards provide TSB's to the dealer because they know nothing about it.
So if a service guy says do not use synth for the first 15K, I'll take that advice with a pinch (truckload) of salt. I will let my own judgement and common sense lead me (also the feedback from other owners on this and other forums).
There was a thread here a short while ago to a synthetic oil myths link, that listed and explained away common myths surrounding the use of synthetic oils.
And I agree with ryoken, I can't find the statement "Mineral based or synthetic type oils may be used in your INFINITI vehicles." on the page referenced in the manual.
I'm still switching when I hit 7500 miles.
