Had this same problem on my Altima. Not saying it's the same thing but it sure sounds like it. It turned out to be the universal joint on the steering column. The thing would get really stiff intermittently and it was scary to say the least. Got the universal changed and it was like butta. Here's the thread, might help someone else before you go dropping a ton of money on things like a new rack or PS pump. I'm sure the G has the same part on the steering shaft somewhere.

Over the past 3 weeks the steering has gotten noticeably harder followed by an annoying rubbing noise which seems to be coming from the interior. Also the steering wheel fails to return after a turn, which is pretty scarey. Yesterday I took it to a so called "reputable" mechanic in the area to diagnose the issue. They told me that the entire rack & pinion and the power steering pump had to be replaced. I have a little auto knowledge and I smelled a scam artist. Quote was $1200 to fix, BS!!
When i picked the car up, the steering was back to normal, perfect actually. Next day I start it up and the problem is back, worse than ever. Now when you steer the car the wheel turn goes from soft to hard, then to soft again so it's like steering in segments.

I read up on this forum about some steering issues similar to mines, some said change the fluid, which i did, and others said it could be a steering angle sensor. The PS fluid is new (Dextron III) and there are no leaks ANYWHERE. No leaks on the PS pump or the rack & pinion, no loss of PS fluid, everything around the engine is bone dry. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this so I don't get screwed by the dealership because i have a feeling they're going to try the same crap and I really don't believe that the rack & pinion is bad. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Bill
If you are experiencing a power/no power symptom in your power steering system there are very few things that will create this problem. 1) The power steering rack assembly is bypassing internally, in some cases only when first started cold then normal steering after the fluid is warm. It's caused by excessive wear inside the rack assembly bore where the seals ride back and forth when turning the wheel left to right. In this instance the power steering fluid will be very dark due to metal frag, and may require not only the rack assembly replacement but pump as well. Normally both as well as a system flush too remove excess metal fragment from hoses/lines. 2) A slipping serpentine belt, either the belt is worn and can no longer grip the pullys properly or the belt tensioner is either stuck in one position or the spring is worn out or broken. 3) If equipped with low speed assist it may be a bad pressure switch or module.
