Whoosh sound immediately after shifting - 5AT

Ran through the searches... very helpful but I couldn't find anything like what I'm experiencing.

I recently noticed my wife’s 2008 G35x (38K miles) makes a whoosh sound immediately after shifting 1-2 and 2-3 when under half or more throttle (might do it from 3-4 but I can’t hear it - too much wind/road noise). When driving part throttle I’m unable to hear the sound.

My first thought was low transmission fluid. I unbolted the dip stick and cold the level is at the top of the HOT mark. After allowing the car the idle for about 5-6 minutes, a check of the dip stick shows the fluid level at the bottom of the dip stick (just barely registering). I’ve never had the car’s trans serviced. There is no leak from the trans and it otherwise performs flawlessly. Seems a pretty well sealed system.

Seeking advice. The nearest dealer is about 40 minutes away so if I can resolve this, that would be preferred.

Sure its not just the whistle of the intake sucking in air? Not sure what you mean by "whoosh"

It almost sounds like water squirting into a jug. Not sure how else to describe the sound. It's not intake sound - this is a new noise.

I'm concerned about adding fluid since it's under warranty and if it turns out to be a transmission problem the dealer might attribute the problem to the overfilled condition.

I made an appointment with the closest dealer. Warranty has to be good for something... and if they don't find anything at least I've had it inspected.

Follow fsm instructions for checking trans fluid level. Normally when hot and with trans in neutral

How is your coolant level?

I don't have the FSM. I did check it on a level surface, after 10 minutes (the last time) of idling and with the trans in neutral.

Interesting you asked about coolant. The coolant was barely registered in the overflow tank (could have been empty given you can't see the bottom). There's some coolant residue around the upper radiator hose where it meets the radiator. But no leakage, indication of coolant in the exhaust or coolant smell. I added coolant to bring it back into range.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but has anyone figured out what causes the WHOOOSH sound? I get the same sound and wanted to know if I should bring this up to the dealer when I drop my car off tomorrow for service.

Thanks,

Lew

I took it to the dealer; the tech said it was normal. It hasn't gotten louder and I haven't had any other problems. Of course if your service department says its normal too, that should make us both feel better.

OK, I'll ask when I drop off the car and post up what they say.

Thanks for the reply.
