Has anyone EVER had any luck getting Nissan/Infiniti to fix their oil consumption issue once the warranty has expired? Here is my situation.....

I just purchased my 2006 G35 Sedan 6mt with rev up 3 weeks ago yesterday and it had 71,235 miles at the time of purchase. I knew full well going into buying it that oil consumption was a real possibility and decided to still move forward with the purchase. I live in Des Moines Iowa and purchased the car from a used car dealer in Overland Park Kansas. I have not quite yet put 1,000 miles on it since the time of purchase and have been keeping an eye on the oil level and it has used about a quart in that time. Yesterday, I went to my local Infiniti dealer to to inquire about the open recall for the side airbag sensor and decided to ask about the oil consumption problem. Found out the prior owner had an extended warranty on the car but apparently that doesn't transfer with the car but the service guy I talked to said he would call his Nissan/Infiniti rep and ask about potentially verifying and fixing the problem. The case I attempted to make is that even though it is only slightly outside of the warranty period, it surely didn't just start consuming oil at it's current rate and has obviously been going on for a while. As of right now, I am waiting to hear back from the guy in the service department although I know it is a long shot. Has anyone had any luck with a similar situation or have any advice on how to proceed?

 

once you find out they will under no circumstances fix it to your satisfaction... try this, put in a one quart can of rislone ring seal (which is a misnomer) this worked for me...the product is about 98% kerosene which is the best cleaner...most engines suffer from rings stuck in the piston ring land and no longer move in and out to conform with bore. this stuff can remove varnish and carbon to allow the rings to work. if you have broken rings all bets are off and you will not know this until you try my advice. after which if normal oil does not make an improvement try 15-40 Shell...not going to cost you much and it works many times.

Thanks for the info, I will research this stuff a little more but some of the reviews so far seem a bit questionable. Anyone else try this stuff?

 

I believe Rislone ring seal is just a viscosity increaser. I wouldn't recommend it. You would have better luck with using a higher viscosity oil, like 10w30 or something like that. But beware that if you go above the recomended oil weight (5w30), you're not going to be protecting your engine as well.

But at least with a higher weight oil you'll know what the viscosity is, unlike when you add Rislone. Who knows what the viscosity is at with that added (could be the equivalent of 15w30, etc.).

 

Youstill have relatively low miles. Get the Infiniti Elite Warranty. You have to go through a certification first but it's cheap insurance especially if you have an Infiniti dealership close to you for other small things that are covered.

 

Interesting. I wasn't aware I could buy a warranty after the original has run out. I wonder if they test for oil consumption as part of the certification.

 

I'd look into the warranty. I bought a used G from a Infiniti dealer out here in NY and also bought a Elite extended warranty and if I sell the car and warranty is still active, it could be transferred to the new owner. Unless if the previous owner had a 3rd party warranty then yea it prob wouldn't transfer.
