Fog Lamps ON?

Does anyone know an easy way to change electrical wiring so I can turn the fog lamps ON with headlights OFF? Can I get a wiring schema or some instructions for my mechanic?

Thanks

What? I am pretty sure on mine I have a switch that works the fogs independantly, but I'll double check that.

You have an independent switch, but the foglights won't turn on unless the headlights are on.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

I don't think there is an easy way to do this. The switch provides input to the body control module (a computer) which communicates over the local network to the power distribution module (another computer) which actually controls the relay.

So, somebody got some crazy idea that you shouldn't be able to turn on the fog lamps without having the low beams on so that's the way it is programmed. Changing this would require some real hacking...

Technically, it's illegal in most (if not all) states to drive around with your parking lights on, and headlights off (and fogs don't count). Maybe they're trying to be your conscience.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

Your right, and now that I think about it, it has to be that way to be street legal from factory.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

I wonder if they passed a new law. Our Jeep can turn the fog lights on w/o the headlights.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

From factory, yes. If the fogs can be turned on without the low beams, they are regular halogen bulbs so there wouldn't be a problem with them being legal or not. No cop would pull you over and say, "your fogs are on but your xenons are not."

It's still a G thang!!

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

Also, the first generation QX4's could turn the fogs on with the parking lights, but without the headlamps. The newer ones can't do it though.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

Hey, just call the fogs day time running lights. Nothing illigal about that.

I thought all cars were supposed to have day time running lights anyway.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

Daytime running lights are actually high beams running at a reduced voltage, by themselves, without parking lights.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

DRLs are optional in USA, GM just went across the board to save money because the build a lot cars in Canada and it was one less build step to make DRL and non-DRL cars.

I think your Jeep has the seperate switch for fogs because when off road, no laws apply.

Yeah, those 2wd 6-cyl Jeeps with the cushy auto-headlamps/Infinity sound system/power seats/etc. get off-road a lot. I know we hit a dirt parking lot with ours at least twice a year.

Re: Fog Lamps ON?

Seriously. I think 99% of SUVs are that way. The whole thing is a marketing gimmick to avoid saying its a station wagon.

But, Jeep owners probably take thiers offroad more than most others I would say.
